Samsung launches Galaxy Buds Plus to finally grab Apple's AirPods Pro
Samsung introduced its latest true wireless earbuds, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus, at its Unpacked 2020 event in San Francisco. With better battery life, additional built-in microphones for better audio calls, and more powerful drivers, the successors to the popular Samsung Galaxy Buds could prove to be a new rival to Apple's AirPods. The new Samsung Galaxy Buds will cost €149.99 and will be available to buy online from February 14 and in stores from March 6. This equates to around €115 / AU€220, but please note that these prices could change when official UK and Australian prices are confirmed. If you pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S20 phones before it's released, you'll get the headphones for free, but after you pay for them. This makes them slightly cheaper than Apple's AirPods, and significantly cheaper than the Sony WF-1000XM3, our current best wireless headphones for 2020.

No noise cancellation

Interestingly, the new earbuds won't block out environmental sound, bucking the recent trend towards noise-canceling true wireless earbuds, as seen on the AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM3. Although they are quite similar to the original Samsung Galaxy Buds, they do offer an upgrade from the previous model, especially when it comes to their superior battery life. The earphones have 11 hours of charging, while the charging case provides an additional 11 hours of charge, bringing the total battery life to 22 hours. Although it's an improvement over its predecessors, the overall battery life isn't huge.

(Image credit: Future) 11 hours might be a decent runtime for the earbuds, but the charging case doesn't provide much extra juice. For comparison, the Apple AirPods hold 5 hours on the tips, with 20 hours of additional time provided by the charging case, for 25 hours in total. Just like the originals, you'll be able to charge the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus wirelessly, while Bluetooth 5.0 support means these earbuds should have no problem pairing and staying connected to your smartphone.

Better sound?

Samsung says the new earbuds contain two speakers, compared to the previous model, which only had one speaker per earbud. This line of speakers includes a woofer and a tweeter, and is expected to offer lower sound than the original Galaxy Buds; That said, Samsung's previous buds were serious enough to begin with, so I'm hoping the new Galaxy Buds Plus can balance that out with high mids and highs.
