If you were hoping for a camera revolution from the Samsung Galaxy S23 or Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus, you may be out of luck as the latest leak suggests that at least one of the sensors will be the same as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus. S22, and there's reason to suspect another might be, too.
According to GalaxyClub (opens in a new tab), the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus will have a 10MP telephoto lens, as will the Galaxy S22 and Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus.
Now the site doesn't know it's an identical sensor, nor does it know if it offers the same 3x optical zoom. But given that it apparently has the same number of megapixels, it's likely to be equal on those fronts as well.
We'd take this with a pinch of salt, as it's extremely early for Samsung Galaxy S23 leaks, and it's unclear where the source got this information from, but it's credible.
As the site points out, the 10MP telephoto lens used by the Samsung Galaxy S22 was only added this year - the previous two models used a different telephoto lens. Samsung doesn't change and update every component every year, so the company is likely to see at least another year in that 10MP sensor.
Likewise, we could see the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus using the same 50MP main sensor as the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, as that was also new this year. Although there are no rumors about it yet, they are just speculation.
However, we can at least see updates to the ultra-wide camera, as the same 12MP has been around for a number of years, and there's also talk of updates to the selfie camera.
Analysis: Bigger updates could be found on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is already way ahead of the rest of the S22 lineup on the camera front, but the S23 Ultra could benefit from more upgrades.
Samsung has outfitted the latest model with identical snappers to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, so at least some of them may need to be upgraded for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, lest it look a bit stale.
We also have an idea of what one of those upgrades could be, as Samsung introduced a 200MP sensor and at least one source believes it could be used in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
On paper, this looks like an upgrade to the main 108MP sensor currently in use, but hopefully the rest of the cameras get some attention too. If they do, Samsung's next Ultra will definitely rank among the best camera phones around.
