Samsung Display to stop production of LCD panels later this year

Samsung Display is the world leader in panels, not just limited to smartphones. A significant but expected change is expected to happen later this year as all LCD production will end. Samsung Display has been the provider of choice for most smartphone and TV brands around the world, with customers ranging from Apple to OnePlus and everything in between. LG happens to be the closest competitor, which is significantly smaller in terms of market share. Reuters reports that Samsung is poised to end all LCD panel production by the end of this year, after executing pending orders from partners. Currently, there are two production lines at its campus in South Korea and two LCD factories in China alone. One of the first will eventually be upgraded into a facility capable of producing higher "quantum dot" displays, while the fate of these remains to be finalized. One of the main reasons for this change is to limit the oversupply of LCD screens when there is a global slowdown for smartphones and TVs. Additionally, most manufacturers are also looking to switch to OLED screens, which are generally considered superior. With the prices of OLED panels falling due to progress, we are now seeing them appear even in budget smartphones. Samsung displays are generally considered the best in the industry, especially when it comes to smartphones. Aspects like high resolutions, triple-digit refresh rates, HDR capabilities, physical curved sides, display biometrics, and never-before-seen maximum brightness levels have all recently been democratized. Even LG announced earlier this year that LG Display Co would stop production of LCD TVs at the end of 2020.
