When you think of Nvidia Turing cards like the RTX 2080, the first thing that probably comes to mind is ray tracing in the best PC games, but what if you could track your voice with rays? Team Green just released the RTX Voice beta, and it might be the best thing you can do with an Nvidia graphics card. The concept is simple: use the AI processing capabilities of Nvidia's tensor cores to block out any background noise, whether it's coming from your speakers or your microphone. At a time when millions of people are working from home, including us, a feature that suppresses annoying noises is truly a godsend. The only potential problem is that this handy piece of software requires the use of an Nvidia RTX graphics card. There is a potential fix, but since we haven't tested it ourselves, we can't recommend it. What we tested, however, was RTX Voice. We tested it through streaming gameplay on Twitch, Discord chat with family, and even a crowd of gatherings.

Gaming PC? More like getting to know a PC
One of the most tolerable things about having to work at home all the time is that we get to use our personal PC for work, which is packed with powerful hardware like a Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB of RAM, and most of all, an Nvidia GeForce. RTX 2080 Ti. So when we learned that RTX Voice was there and could use the power of our graphics cards in a really productive way, we obviously immediately jumped on it. If you want to do the same, you can simply download the client by going to this Nvidia page and following the instructions. It took us about 5 minutes, then we were good to go. Once you've got it installed and running, you'll want to at least change your input into Nvidia RTX Voice through the sound settings of the app you want to use. Please note that since this is a fairly early beta state, not all apps will be supported. So overall we could use it with just about any program we really wanted the technology to work with, like Discord, Google Hangouts, Zoom, and OBS, tuning Windows 10 audio to Nvidia RTX Voice meant some things just didn't they had audio. But, hey, it works on all the teleconferencing and streaming apps we've installed at the moment, which is a lot, so let's just call it a win.

Works like a charm
Right after downloading RTX Voice, we did what any normal person would do and loaded up Audacity and started making a lot of noise on our keyboard while we were talking. Here's the miraculous part: it works like a spooky charm. Not only did we stop hearing the keyboard while we were talking, but all the background noise — keep in mind TechRadar's US headquarters is in New York — has simply disappeared. We then made a video call with a family with RTX Voice enabled, and while it worked like a charm, we heard that our voice had gone down in volume with it enabled, a small price to pay. Really, though, we've been in so many meetings where people have sirens going off in the background, keyboard noises, or even pets making all sorts of noises. This kind of software is really a blessing. The best part? You can activate it on incoming sound. During our various meetings today, we activated RTX Voice, and all the annoying noises disappeared, from our end and from the other parties. This not only leads to better sound quality, but it's easier to pay attention to what's going on in a presentation without having to wonder what random noise is.
Do you need to download RTX Voice?
If you have an RTX-powered computer that you can work with, RTX Voice is well worth the download. The clarity of your voice and that of others makes meetings more comfortable for everyone involved, especially if you live in a generally noisy environment. Downloading and activating the software is also an extremely easy process, so even if it's still in beta, we recommend it to anyone with the right hardware. However, if you don't have the right equipment, you may be out of luck. We've already said that there is a workaround if you have a non-RTX Nvidia graphics card, but we haven't tested this workaround ourselves, so we can't really make any recommendations on it. All we're saying is that if you're comfortable messing around with certain files, this option is open to you. Note that this will not open up any GPUs for use with RTX voice. It would only work fine on Nvidia Pascal or newer GPUs, so if you have something like the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or an AMD graphics card, you're probably in trouble. Regardless, in our experience, this software has been a dream come true. We will use it in almost every meeting we have in the future, and we will encourage our colleagues to do the same.
