Rey, Poe and Finn could return in Star Wars, says Lucasfilm president

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has suggested that the main characters from the Star Wars sequel could return in future Disney projects.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Kennedy said of Daisy Ridley's Rey, Oscar Isaac's Poe and John Boyega's Finn: “These are definitely not characters we're going to forget. team too."

Understandably, the Star Wars boss didn't elaborate on the studio's plans, though we think Resistance heroes are more likely to appear in future Disney Plus shows than in any other movie.

In fact, if Lucasfilm is serious about reintroducing their sequel-era trio in a meaningful way, the more plausible storyline would see them star in new animated adventures, rather than live-action projects, especially since the own. actors don't seem interested. to resume their roles.

In a 2019 Variety interview, Ridley, Boyega, and Isaac claimed they were done with Star Wars after The Rise of Skywalker was released, with Boyega going so far as to say, "You're not going to Disney. More me!"

Ridley was a bit more nuanced in his statement. "I think it's just a great story and a great ending," he said, "and while obviously the characters continue to exist, it should be so extraordinary, and I don't know if it's possible."

Advance, Lucasfilm

As to whether audiences want to see Rey, Poe, and Finn return is an entirely bigger question.

It's no secret that every movie in the sequel trilogy, beginning with The Force Awakens in 2015, has divided fans of the franchise. The reception for the latest installment, in particular, was scathing, so it would be difficult to reintroduce the trio in a way that is both exciting and useful.

It's not a disdain for the performance of any of the three actors, but much of the criticism of the sequel trilogy comes from its similarity to the original Star Wars films.

Many fans enjoyed the nostalgia for The Force Awakens, but the following entries have become ridiculous re-hashes of the famous beats and sets of the Star Wars plot, under the general excuse of continuing the Skywalker saga, which have left the public wondering why they were created. first.

To its credit, the Star Wars franchise has moved away from its Skywalker traps and branched out into spinoff shows that explore the most interesting parts of a galaxy far, far away. The Mandalorian has been a huge success so far, The Bad Batch has had an admirable first season, and excitement is building for both The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Why, then, would Lucasfilm want to retread the old earth by throwing its characters from the uninspired sequel trilogy into the fray?

To be fair, the studio is barely getting on with these last two Disney Plus shows, as the characters they relate to are some of the most beloved in the entire franchise, but Rey, Poe, and Finn? Not that much.
