Prices and availability

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro certainly isn't cheap at $229 / £249 / AUS$399. But when you consider that it's a home security camera as well as a smart doorbell it removes the price tag you'd otherwise mode would be high. By comparison, Ring's flagship Video Doorbell Elite is $349 / £349 AU$499, which allows you to add a pro-grade Ethernet connection, flush mounting, and a sleek design. That said, the entry-level Ring Video Doorbell costs $59.99 / £49 / AU$119, while the battery-powered Ring Video Doorbell 4 is priced at $199.99 / £179 / AU$329. To get the most out of your Video Doorbell, you'll need a Ring Protect plan. Pricing starts at €3 / €2.50 / AU$4 per month or €30 / €24.99 / AU$40 for a year, but you get a 30-day free trial included with the doorbell. This provides up to 30 days of online storage so you can review any video once captured, and also provides access to other features to help reduce unwanted motion alerts.

Design and configuration

As far as doorbells go, this is a very good example. Even the button is surrounded by this futuristic ring of blue light that gives the brand its double meaning. Puns aside, this ring of light is also a nice feedback feature (with an audible tone) so whoever presses the doorbell knows it's working and doesn't keep knocking on the door too. - ideal for anyone taking a nap. The exterior contour is sleek, minimalist and can be tailored to match your front door décor with different faceplates including satin nickel, pearl, venetian and black all included. The reason for a removable faceplate is not just for customization, but also allows for simple setup. With the faceplate off, you can access the settings button, which then locks securely when the faceplate is screwed on. This occurs after the unit has been wired with two individual screws. Wall mounting is simpler and requires drilling, but all parts, including the drill bit, are included. So all you need is a drill, then you can mount and wire it, replacing your existing doorbell. So installation isn't easy, but if you live up to that expectation, you'll be glad Ring made it as easy as possible, who will do everything they can to help you out. This includes a transformer, as your current non-smart doorbell is unlikely to use a 12V connection. All of this only needs to be done once, unlike the easier to install battery unit which then requires charge maintenance. Then simply download the app, fill in a few details, log in, and you're up and running.

Features

The basics should be mentioned first, as they cover everything you would expect. This means Full HD 1080 video with two-way talk functionality. This can be done via the smartphone app, meaning you'll receive alerts wherever you are when you press the doorbell. It can also work with a plug-in chime for more traditional alerts. You also get night vision which in the case of this model is also in color for clarity. Further enhanced features, which also help make it a security solution, include custom motion zones, motion-activated alerts, live view video on demand, and Amazon Alexa support. You can also link it to other Ring security cameras so it's all integrated into one app for easy home monitoring. If you have a smart lock, you can unlock it, but not in the app.

Performance

Most important: does it work as a doorbell? Yeah. However, sometimes there may be a slight delay when opening the app with a two-way video connection. That being said, the alert goes off immediately so you can start walking out the door when the app opens in case of a slight delay. We're sticklers here, as this delay is only a few seconds, but it's worth mentioning. Once connected, video quality is excellent regardless of lighting. The faces are very clear which makes it a great security camera even at night. Audio quality wasn't that great with some lag and cracking at both ends, despite a strong Wi-Fi connection on both devices. It was in a quiet environment without noise from the street to fear, or the winds. It almost makes us think the device is faulty as you'd think the audio would be fine when the video image quality is so excellent. Also, many other reviewers had no problems with audio, although some had longer connection times than we did. Motion zones are a fantastic addition that work better on this doorbell than the battery-powered options. This is because Pro uses the camera's video sensor to detect motion instead of using the battery-saving PIR sensor. As such, you can set up very specific movement zones, allowing your neighbors to walk by or people walking on the street, without raising an alert. There are also different levels of sensitivity, which we adjusted until there were fewer notifications, ultimately leaving us with the least sensitive setting. Another cool touch is the ability to pause motion alerts - great if you're unloading a car, for example. Another great addition is the ability to set alerts only when people are detected, rather than just motion. It's good if you have zones and sensitivity settings but still get too many notifications. Ring works well with many services, most based in the US, but it's Amazon's Alexa that we liked because it allows you to receive notifications through your Echo speakers. If you have an Echo Show with a screen, you can even see who's at the door and talk to them.

Final verdict

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro is the best the company has produced so far, without spending much more on the Elite model. Using mains electricity makes installation a bit more difficult, but there are no maintenance requirements and you benefit from motion area detection, making it a true home security device. Of course, this assumes that you opt for the monthly cloud storage subscription. Competition from the likes of Next Hello, with continuous recording and facial recognition, is strong but it's a very compelling offering. Video quality is excellent, day or night, with clear face detection. Two-way communication works, but it lacked clarity, at least in our tests. Response times were decent with an easy to use app that offers great features without being overly complicated to use. Adding Amazon Alexa support for use with Echo devices is really helpful if you have them. The included doorbell is another nice touch from Ring that makes it a complete home notification system right out of the box. First Review: October 2020 Price - Ring Doorbell Pro: ▼
