Name.com Review | The comparison

Name.com Review | The comparison Name.com is surtout connu as a domain registrar, but it also proposes a small name of products d'hébergement partagé: hébergement de site Web de base, hébergement WordPress, a constructeur de site Web et a plan d'une page très simple. These products are a bit limited and the prices are above average. The starter plan supports a single website and includes 10 GB of disk space, 100 GB of bandwidth, 100 emails and a free SSL Encryption Everywhere certificate for €4.99 per month for the first year, €6 a from then on. For comparison, Namecheap's domain registrar's Stellar plan includes 99GB of storage, unlimited bandwidth, 20 email accounts, and support for three domains, and is priced at $30 for the first year. €1.44 when renewing. Elsewhere, basic managed WordPress hosting (unlimited storage and bandwidth, free daily backups, ``theme and plugin support'') starts at $2.88 per month paid annually, but getting just one email goes up. the price at €2.50 and opting for 4.16 email addresses pushes it to a freakishly high €10. WordPress Pro-Blogger & Business plans include 19.15 to 1 email accounts.

SSL

SSL certificates and emails are not included in all Name.com plans, but are now available (Image credit: Name.com) These plans previously did not include SSL, and Name.com suggests that if you need it, you will need to purchase a regular hosting account. Now, however, SSL encryption is available for free with your purchase. The other slightly interesting option is a one-page Web site plan that allows you to set up a simple one-page site, including free SSL and one transfer e-mail address, and costs €4,99 annually. Your site can only be a basic landing page, so there isn't much you can do with it. But if that's essentially all you need, an online indicator of your actual business, then this could be a quick, easy, and inexpensive solution. If you're looking for something more powerful (cloud hosting, VPS, dedicated servers), prepare for disappointment, because you won't find anything like it here.

Contac us

Signing up for Name.com works pretty much the same way as any other web service you've used before: choose a plan, click the Pay button, enter your details to create an account, and pay by card, PayPal, MasterCard, American Express , Discover, Diners Card, AliPay and China UnionPay. If anything, it's even simpler than you'll see with most providers, as Name.com has so few products that it can summarize their entire range on one short page. Name.com recently added Cloud Hosting, Digital Ocean Basic Droplets.

Hosting management console

Name.com's hosting admin console is pretty basic (Image credit: Name.com) We bought a starter web hosting panel and then turned to Name.com's surprisingly basic hosting admin panel. About half of the panel was blank, and the rest was limited to some basic plan details (default domain, hosting server name and IP address, cPanel username) and your domain's DNS records. None of this will mean much to Name.com's target audience, both new users and newbies. There is help here, albeit poorly presented. Click the arrow to the right of the cPanel login button and a dropdown menu includes shortcuts to some of the most important website building and administration features: WordPress, Email Accounts, File Manager, Accounts FTP, subdomains, etc. If you just need to download a static site, for example, choose the file manager option and you can get the job done right away. This is good news, but the panel should present them on the front end so they're immediately visible, without hiding them under a cPanel button, when the people who need to see them most can't. cPanel is.

cPanel

Build and manage your site with the powerful tools of cPanel (Image credit: Name.com) If you're familiar with cPanel, or just click this button, you'll find a regular cPanel install with all the major administration and configuration tools of the site you need.

Softaculous

Softaculous can automatically install WordPress and hundreds of other applications (Image credit: Name.com) Softaculous is a powerful platform that automates the installation of WordPress and more than 450 other applications, for example. File managers and FTP accounts allow you to upload and work with a static site. MySQL and phpMyAdmin let you create and work with databases, domain tools can set up subdomains or redirects, and a stack of email features help you add and manage email accounts, forwarders, autoresponders, and more. Overall, we're happy to see both cPanel and Softaculous are included in Name.com's shared hosting, and that's a definite plus for the service. But the company hasn't made any significant effort to present them in a way that makes them easier to access or use.

Performance

Performance

Name.com hosting is aimed squarely at newbies, which means the company needs to provide the quality support their target audience needs. The knowledge base of the company is pretty decent. Menus and links take you to various topics, featured articles highlight common issues, and there's a search box to help you find what you need. We have attempted some test investigations with limited success. The engine has consistently reported finding a large number of articles (148 for ``email''), but these cover all Name.com products, not just web hosting, so we had to scroll down on various domain registration and email hosting articles to find what we needed. The situation improved once we found more relevant content. There's usually not a lot of detail, but most articles cover the basics, with screenshots to point you in the right direction and video tutorials if you prefer. There is a support team to deal with more complex queries. They are available by phone and live chat, for a limited number of hours only (7am-10pm by phone and 12pm-3am Mon-Fri by phone, 2am-8pm by chat), but there is ticketing support. .24/7 if you need it. We completed the review using Uptime.com to verify the availability and speed of our review site. The test accessed our site every five minutes over a one-week period, over 2,000 data points, and found that Name.com had an average response time of 220ms. With most shared hosting products averaging between 200 and 400 ms, this is a great result and puts Name.com among our top testers.

Final verdict

Name.com's shared hosting plans don't make any major bugs, and our test site performed very well in our benchmarks. If you can live with the different plan limits, the carrier may be a smart choice, but you'll find more features for less money elsewhere. Price - Name.com Name.com:
