Required: Project Management Tools for Apple Remote Enterprise

With a rush of users migrating to Mac and iOS, I'm interested in project management solutions for Apple's new company. I spoke briefly with Antoni Cherif about why ProjectWizards and his Merlin Project software can be part of the toolkit for stressed-out managers trying to figure out how to master hybrid work environments. Merlin Project isn't the only game available to Apple users; you can turn to Wrike, MeisterTask, Zoho Project, and other already complicated solutions to get their attention. Software to support project management and team collaboration benefits from moving to a remote company. It is a market segment that is expected to reach a CAGR of 10,67% in 2026, rising from €5,37 billion in 2020 to €9,81 billion. I plan to take a closer look at project management solutions (including Merlin) in the future, so if you're developing professional project management software for Mac and iOS, please let me know.

Almost 20 years of telecommuting

Cherif claims a big advantage of his newly updated solution is that his company eats its own dog food. “We've been a remote business since 2002, so we have a lot of experience working from home,” she said. “Since we have used Project Merlin ourselves, we have developed it to better meet our needs. It has helped us through the pandemic and we believe there will be a bigger shift towards working from home in the future,” she said. The latter is good news for the developer, as Merlin Project is designed to support project planning, execution, communication, and scheduling; in other words, it is made for the specific challenge of remote management of distributed teams and is already used in critical businesses. .

Who uses Merlin Project?

Project Merlin's clients work in the US and European space industries, particularly in marketing, telecommunications and media companies. The software is also used in architecture, construction, and even used by one of the largest software companies "in their Mac business unit," Cherif said, though he declined to name names. The solution also seems to scale efficiently, making it accessible to both novice users and experienced project managers. It features powerful synchronization, synchronizing changes made by multiple users without data disappearing, being overwritten, or generating conflicting files.

What does Merlin Project offer?

Natively written for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, the software's main features include work breakdown (Gantt chart, netplan, etc.), Kanban boards for agile thinking, mind mapping, resource management, and resource pool tools. Merlin also offers tools to generate, group, design, and export/import employee assignment reports. The latter means that you can import elements from MS Project, Microsoft Excel, MindManager, XML, OPML, etc. (and export in these formats too). It costs €149/user/year, or €69,99/user/year for the iPad/iPhone version, and has access to almost every feature on iOS and Mac.

What information does it provide?

In use, it allows project managers to create procedural structures that reveal the dependencies between all activities in a project. This is very useful as it allows management to make more efficient estimates of project duration, key objectives, and strategic project deliverables. Schedules, budgets, costs, progress, and change management can be implemented in these plans, which can generate project details in a variety of reports, charts, and workflow templates. The ability to implement changes to the project plan is invaluable, given that almost all projects fail.

Who is it not for?

Perhaps the biggest challenge with the Merlin Project is its lack of support for Windows. This is something that likely weakens the potential of the product, as companies running multiple platforms are likely to need a solution that supports them all. However, businesses that have standardized on the iPhone, iPad, and/or Mac will feel comfortable with this powerful project planning solution. Individuals and small businesses do not need to invest in the application on a large scale, as Merlin Project Express is also available, optimized for small projects and available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

There is no question that one of the great HR challenges of the remote enterprise is the rapidly emerging need for a new management approach. The change in work habits forces managers to work harder to break down projects, plan them, and execute them for distributed teams that are sometimes asynchronous. While this is more difficult, perhaps impossible for stuck traditional managers, the rewards in employee empowerment, job satisfaction, and retention are recognizable. Well-managed remote workers perform better, work longer hours, and achieve a better work-life balance. As with other project management solutions, Merlin Project appears to provide a powerful software tool to enable successful management of these distributed teams. As recognition of the need for tools of this type grows, it seems inevitable that we will see exciting developments in this space, especially around remote workstation ergonomics and employee health.
