CinemaCon 2022 Recap: Avatar, Mission: Impossible 7, Top Gun & More

CinemaCon, the film industry's annual preview of the movies that will light up movie screens next year, has just wrapped up.

For the past four days, executives, journalists, producers, representatives from streaming services and all the major movie theater chains have gathered at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas for a preview of all the movies that await us in the next few days. months.

Unlike 2021, where the most discussed topic was the fate of movie theaters as the Covid-19 pandemic continued to ravage the world, the 2022 convention was a more traditional, star-studded affair.

The list of A-listers who showed up to showcase their new projects was long. Over four days, Keanu Reeves, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and, in an appearance notable for other reasons, Olivia Wilde, took the stage to chat with the crowd.

Many new features have come out and we have summarized them all for you below:

Mission: Impossible 7 has a title

And that title is Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, which is one hell of a mouthful.

Star Tom Cruise didn't make it to CinemaCon because he's in South America, where he's currently filming the eighth installment of Mission: Impossible, which will likely be called Mission: Impossible: Final Reckoning Part 2?

He gave a pre-recorded message to attendees before the film's trailer airs, which sees Cruise's Ethan Hunt dressed as Henry Czerny's Eugene Kittridge, the former head of the Impossible Missions Force, who does not appear in the franchise. since 1996.

Reports from the trailer talked about his acting and showmanship, with Cruise's taste for bigger stunts being featured once again.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, which raised a colossal €290 million for covid-19, will hit theaters on July 14, 2023, with Part 2 slated for summer 2024.

We've been waiting a long time for the sequel to the iconic action blockbuster Top Gun. No matter how many years it took for the sequel to the 1986 film to materialize, the film's first release date was supposed to be July 2019, but early production was pushed back and then postponed by the pandemic. .

The movie finally rolled out of the cutting room and critics were blown away, as you can see from some of the reactions below:

TOP GUN: MAVERICK is the perfect blockbuster. Not only did it feature ravishing dogfight sequences, but I actually cried, it's so moving. And call me crazy, but I humbly predict that it will get a Best Picture nomination next year. It's not just SO good, it's SO good. 😉 April 28, 2022

Another project with a very long development history, with work on the big screen adaptation of Gearbox's hit video game Borderlands beginning in 2015, the film industry got its first taste of what to expect from Eli Roth's vision of the franchise.

It was only shown for about a minute, but The Hollywood Reporter called the footage "electric" and with star Cate Blanchett showing herself in a way "she's never been seen before, in a red fire truck wig, carrying a gun and making his way through a brightly colored urban landscape".

Footage showed Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis and mountain man Florian Munteanu in action as delegates discovered a very different kind of Pandora.

Speaking of which...

The sequel to Avatar is finally here...

James Cameron has taken his time on his Avatar sequel, but the trailer and the film's title, Avatar: The Way Of The Water, was officially released ahead of the Christmas 2022 release.

Audiences were invited to don 3D glasses to view the footage, which Deadline described as even more "stunning in its deep blue imagery than the 2009 film" and "truly a whole new world".

We also learned that the trailer will debut in theaters alongside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when it hits theaters next week, with the online release a week later.

On top of that, Disney plans to re-release the original Avatar on September 23 worldwide with remastered audio and sound.

Don't Worry Darling is controversial, on and off stage

do not worry honey

Don't Worry Darling, the new drama starring Harry Styles and Black Widow's Florence Pugh, has been touted as hot and heavy by those who have seen the first images of the film.

The drama stars Pugh as Alice, a 1950s housewife who lives with her husband Jack in a utopian experimental community. At first happy, she begins to worry that her glamorous company, The Victory Project, is hiding disturbing secrets...

The trailer focused on the steamy on-screen antics between Pugh and Styles with a few hints at the film's more dystopian aspects. It is scheduled to hit theaters in September.

But what really turned out to be controversial was what happened to director Olivia Wilde, who introduced the film to delegates as she spoke. Wilde received a manila envelope during her speech, which she kept, but did not open during the presentation, leaving reporters to speculate whether or not she was part of the presentation.

The envelope later turned out to contain legal documents from attorneys representing Wilde's former partner, Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis.

Variety published a detailed report on the controversy, which instead overshadowed Wilde's presentation and CinemaCon in general to some extent. Sudeikis denied any knowledge of the hack, and CinemaCon is reviewing its security procedures. All very bad reputation.

The Hunger Games are back, but with whom?

Lionsgate has confirmed that the prequel to its multibillion-dollar Hunger Games franchise, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is on the way, offering a release date of November 17, 2023.

The prequel is set many years before Jennifer Lawrence's The Adventures of Katniss Everdeen and centers on a young Coriolanus Snow, who would go on to become the tyrannical president of Pan-Am.

The film is currently in production and Lionsgate offered a clip, but did not show footage from the film or reveal the cast of the film, which remains a mystery...

John Wick 4 speeds things up...

Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski traveled to Las Vegas to launch the fourth episode of John Wick and showed delegates a first trailer.

Reports point to another frantic ballet marvel and everyone should be excited for a new presence: this time Wick brings nunchakus...

Damien Chazelle returns to La La Land

The earth

The director of La La Land and Whiplash gave a first look at Babylon, his lavish 1920s drama that examines Hollywood's shift from silent to talkies.

Delegates got their first look at Brad Pitt as silent movie star John Gilbert and Margot Robbie as 1920s icon Clara Bow.

Comparisons have been offered to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and The Great Gatsby, which will no doubt please Chazelle.

It leaves on Christmas day.

And in other news...

CinemaCon proved to be a busy time for Margot Robbie, who, in addition to launching Babylon, also introduced David O'Russell's star-studded new drama Amsterdam, and offered a first look at Barbie, her team-up with Ladybird's Greta Gerwig. new version of the ever popular children's dolls.

A few sequels have also been announced, with Warner Bros announcing the return of Robert Pattinson's The Batman, Sony confirming Venom 3, and Universal revealing their musical Wicked will be split into two parts.

On top of that, Lionsgate showed off some explosive footage from the fourth Expendables movie, which is now called Expend4bles.
