Raspberry Pi users will soon have a new operating system to play with

Raspberry Pi users can now look forward to using a new operating system that should be available in the last quarter of this year for the latest Pi devices.

The previously unsupported Fedora operating system will now be fully operational on the Raspberry Pi 4, with approval granted by the Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee (FESCo) during the first week of August 2022.

It should come as no surprise that Fedora 37 is another version of Linux, but its credentials stretch far enough to assume that it is the distribution of choice for Linux creator Linus Torvalds.

Fedora OS for Raspberry Pi

According to Phoronix (Opens in a new tab), Official Fedora 37 approval has been given to Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 400, and Compute Model 4. General availability is expected to begin in October 2022.

Fedora Workstation (one of three versions) is designed for use on the Raspberry Pi 4, which uses the familiar GNOME desktop environment. Graphics drivers, OpenGL drivers, and GPU certification for Vulkan support this decision.

The Fedora Wiki (opens in a new tab) summarizes: "Work around Raspberry Pi 4 has been going on for several years, but we have never officially supported it due to the lack of accelerated graphics and other key features with Fedora 37 , Raspberry Pi 4 is now officially supported, including V3D GPU-accelerated graphics.

He continues: “Supporting the Raspberry Pi ecosystem has been a constant evolution. The purpose of this change is to support Raspberry Pi 4 including 4B, 400 and CM4 with IO board.

With more Linux distributions targeting the Raspberry Pi, Windows and macOS machines may soon be at greater risk than previously anticipated.
