The answers to today's Quordle, game #427, are...

Today's Quordle answers are pretty straightforward, with no hideously weird letters like X or J included and a single puzzle that even includes a repeating letter.

None of the four words are particularly obscure either, and there's a nice balance of common consonants and vowels in each of them. Strangely, I had trouble detecting that DOWN was an answer for a long time, just having my brain blown on that one, but I finally figured it out and solved today's Quordle with two guesses left.

Quordle FAQ: Everything you need to know

What is Quardle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word every day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And instead of completing them all at once, you do them simultaneously. He gets nine tries, instead of Wordle's six, but the rules are very similar.

It is played online through the Quardle's website (opens in a new tab) and can also be accessed through the Merriam-Webster (opens in a new tab) site, after Quordle was bought by the dictionary last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for all players every day, which means you're competing against the rest of the world. And also, just like with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a new challenge every day.

The website also includes a practice mode, which I recommend using before trying the actual game. - and there are daily stats, including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements: specific badges for winning a game within a certain number of rounds, playing multiple times, or guessing particularly difficult words.

Oh, and it's hard. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

Quordle's rules are almost identical to Wordle's.

1. The letters that are in the answer and in the correct place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters not in the answer turn grey...

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all squares of the puzzle at the same time, so an A can turn green in one square, yellow in another, and gray in the last two.

5. The answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear multiple times. So if your guess includes two letters of the same letter, they can both turn yellow, both turn green, or one can turn yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in the Quordle dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for example.

8. You are not required to include the correct letters in the following guesses, and there is no equivalent of Wordle's hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

ten. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your time zone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle should be approached differently than Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine tries, you can't blindly throw letters at them and expect to win; you will have much better chances if you think strategically.

This is also the case in Wordle, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use multiple seed words

First of all, you won't want just one seed word, but almost certainly two or three seed words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle seeds, because the same things that make them work well will apply here as well. But after that, you have to select another word or perhaps two that use many more of the most common consonants and include all the remaining vowels.

For example, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters of the alphabet, including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C, and H). There are many other options, you might want to put an M, B, F, or G instead of the H, perhaps, but something like this should work.

If all goes well, this will give you a good idea of what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. Otherwise, good luck!

2. Limit things

Second, if you are faced with a word where the answer could easily be one of many choices, for example ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH, or PATCH, you definitely want to guess a word. which would narrow down these options.

In Wordle, instead, you can try several of them in succession and hope that one of them is correct, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but it will work sometimes. Also, it is the only option in hard mode. But in Quordle this will almost certainly result in failure, you just don't have enough guesswork.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a good guess, since it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.
