Development on the PS5 has been largely secret for the past few years, but it appears that at least one source at Sony was comparing the next-gen console to Netflix when it introduced the platform to game developers. Kotaku editor Jason Schreier posted on the Resetera forum site, commenting, "I've heard some fascinating things about the PS5 operating system like this, one of the arguments they've made to developers is 'playing a PS5 game should be as simple as Netflix.” “They want to give players the impression that they can load the game right away and know exactly how long an activity will take. They want people to be more inclined to play in short bursts instead of wanting to turn on the console only when they have a few hours to spare." Netflix is a notable comparison, if only because the streaming service has stated that the real competition for streaming TV lies with video games like Fortnite. It seems clear that delivering fast-access content will be just as crucial as delivering quality content on the next generation of consoles, as evidenced by the growing interest in game streaming, with PS Now, Google Stadia and Project xCloud emerging in in recent years as an alternative to buying games one by one.
