PS5 controller adds 'weight and weight' to heroes, Marvel Avengers developers say
Since it has its own superpowers, it makes sense that the DualSense controller would be used in the PS5 update for Marvel's Avengers. After all, while Earth's Mightiest Heroes already feel powerful enough on PS4, why wouldn't developer Crystal Dynamics want to make that feeling even better? Well, that's exactly what it does with the PS5 update for Marvel's Avengers, which promises faster load times, 4K visuals, and spatial audio support when it launches on March 18, alongside the Hawkeye DLC. While these are improvements to expect from a next-gen update, and spatial bar audio will also roll out with the Xbox Series X update, Crystal Dynamics has also chosen to go a step further by rolling out controller support. DualSense. enabling Marvel's Avengers. to use the haptic feedback and adaptive controllers of the PS5 gamepad. We spoke to Crystal Dynamics Senior Game Designer Scott Walters and Nixxes Narrative Designer Keano Raubun about the upcoming update to Marvel's Next Generation Avengers and how DualSense will enhance the experience for PS5 players.

While Xbox Series X/ S will benefit from improved visuals, significantly faster load times and better frame rates, PS5 gamers will benefit from all of this, along with DualSense support. This DualSense support means that Marvel's Avengers will use haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on PS5, making hero movements and abilities more immersive than ever before. “We've put a lot of work into making sure each different ability and ranged attack feels different and unique to each of the heroes and we're using it as another way to add additional character depth to each player. Scott Walters tells us, “I really think adaptive triggers help put weight and weight on some of these actions.” Walters uses the example of how DualSense support will affect the feel of using Hawkeye's bow, the latest hero to arrive in Marvel's Avengers. "You can feel the tension in the string as you hold down as you load and aim that enhanced shot," Walters tells us. "And obviously we try to make bows feel different from pistols, feel different from repellents." Walters explains that the team wanted to ensure that when players "jump" between heroes, each hero and their subsequent abilities feel different from each other, and that the player feels that difference through controller feedback. This means that when you hold down the trigger on Black Widow's semi-automatic pistol, which is released in short bursts, the feel should be noticeably different than firing single shots, which requires pulling the trigger per shot.

Now, gamers can opt for 60fps using 4K checkered resolution on Sony's new console. Considering we had some issues with frame rate drops in our review of Marvel's Avengers, it's good that these updates stabilize the game's performance. "I really think gamers will appreciate the graphical improvements," says Walters. "It's a big thing for a lot of people with the new consoles, is that they want to see the power of these platforms." While there are some minor differences in the next-gen updates for both consoles, both will benefit from significantly faster load times. Square Enix told TechRadar that loading times on Xbox Series X and PS5 are "at least ten times faster" and "up to 20 times" faster compared to last-gen consoles, while "loading has been removed". “Just thinking for myself, one of my favorite things is the loading time, it's so fast,” Keano Raubun tells us. “Every time you die, every time you move from one area to another, every time you enter the Quinjet, it's really great to get people into the game and stay involved longer.” Next-gen updates to Marvel's Avengers and Operation Hawkeye DLC will be available on March 18.
