First look: JVC Fire TV Edition 4K HDR TV
It seems Amazon is squarely focused on TVs these days, and we're not just talking about the Fire TV streaming stick. Amazon's Fire TV platform is now integrated with TVs from other brands, including the Toshiba Fire TV, announced last year. Starting at IFA 2019, the Fire TV family got much bigger, expanding to include a new JVC Fire TV Edition bundle with a 4K panel and HDR (High Dynamic Range). Several Fire TV compatible bundles are being released in the UK and Europe, of which the JVC Fire TV edition is just one. However, given its low price - it starts at €349 - we collected our first impressions by seeing the JVC Fire TV edition on screen.

Integrated

As a budget, the JVC Fire TV Edition keeps things simple. It has a simple black bezel that hugs the panel on all sides, with a silver metal bracket perched below. There is also a harmless JVC logo below the screen. You can expect to get the Voice Remote with Alexa, which comes with new Fire TV and Fire TV Cube cast keys, which means you can use basic voice commands to power settings (turn on/off) your TV, the volume controls and navigation. We do know that the set will be available in three sizes: 40-inch, 49-inch, and 55-inch.

Performance

(Image credit: TechRadar) There's no direct point of comparison for the JVC Fire TV Edition, given the other TV manufacturers Amazon has worked with in the past. Toshiba Fire TV launched in the US in mid-2019, which we feel is better for HD viewing on a budget TV, rather than the more demanding processing required for 4K. However, the JVC Fire TV Edition is a 4K HDR TV and therefore supports the HDR10 standard as well as the dynamic Dolby Vision HDR format. However, we've found that cheaper sets generally struggle with the premium Dolby formats, either to improve quality or to play the format, and you may not want to buy this set for that purpose. Considering its low price, you shouldn't expect spectacular picture quality, though the Fire TV platform should provide a well-organized smart TV platform with which to access various apps and streaming services. , such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hayu and FreeView Play.

First thoughts

We'll be putting the JVC Fire TV Edition through our usual market tests, which we think will arrive in time for December shopping, if not UK Black Friday the month before. What we've seen makes us think it'll be a perfectly acceptable budget TV, although you'll likely struggle to make use of the high resolution and HDR capability Amazon is currently promoting for the TV.
