The increasing complexity of cyberattacks is forcing companies to add additional cybersecurity tools and solutions, including antivirus, antiransomware, endpoint protection, and more. - to their toolkits, which quickly become untenable.

A survey by Zero Trust specialist Perimeter 81 found that half of companies with more than 1.000 employees use 20 or more cybersecurity services to mitigate attacks.

Yet despite this, nearly two-thirds have experienced what the report calls a "significant cybersecurity incident" since early 2021.

Devastating

The report notes that having a large number of often incompatible security solutions makes it difficult for IT professionals to get an overview of the state of security in real time within the organization.

Unsurprisingly, seven in 10 VPs and CIOs surveyed believe that having so many tools affects their ability to detect and prevent threats. This is not surprising given that all security solutions must be properly implemented and maintained across all network endpoints, gateways, and attack surfaces.

Changing security issues can also lead to unexpected scenarios that can provide a window of opportunity for an attacker or cause false positives.

Covid, a harmful catalyst

The additional workload was caused by the thousands of entities, large and small, that embraced hybrid work.

Amit Bareket, CEO of Perimeter 81, said: “A remarkable 87% of the companies surveyed will have hybrid workers even after Covid, with more than half of them working remotely three to four days a week. This is a dramatic development that continually increases the size of the network's attack surface and forces IT professionals to quickly seek long-term solutions.

Furthermore, the report highlighted the shocking fact that 59% of companies admitted to paying a ransom to cybercriminals, and nearly half of them had data recovery costs of between € 100,000 and € 1 million.
