Panasonic's HZ2000 OLED TV Replaces One of Last Year's Best TVs

Panasonic has a new darling TV for 2020: the OLED HZ2000, available in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes. Successor to last year's GZ2000, which earned five stars in our review, it again has a custom OLED panel and extensive HDR support, with a few improvements that could once again make these the best TVs in its price range. The first is Filmmaker Mode, which we first heard about in late 2019, promising to show movies "as intended" by their directors and creators. These attempts at color control often allow for flat viewing experiences, as they don't allow home TVs to play to their advantage or cover their weaknesses with clever processing techniques, as we've seen with Netflix's Calibrated Mode. But if there's anything serious about Panasonic, it's movie-quality TVs. The Japanese manufacturer has teamed up with Hollywood colorist Stefan Sonnenfeld (A Star is Born, The Force Awakens) to ensure its line of high-end OLED TVs produce the right type of images for a production studio monitor, closing the gap between home and professional viewing.

Panasonic's cinematic credentials may bode well for viewers' home theater experience, and we'll be keeping a close eye on the HZ2000 to see how this new display mode performs. We also know that the HZ2000 will be brighter than previous OLEDs set up by the TV manufacturer, though just how big of a jump it will be and whether that will make a significant difference remains to be seen - you'll need to wait for our hands-on test to see what we make of it.
