Optus Acquires Amaysim: Here's What It Means For New And Existing Customers
Optus announced in November the acquisition of Australia's fourth largest mobile provider, Amaysim, and today the telco has completed the acquisition. Amaysim was founded in 2010 and already operates on the Optus 4G Plus cellular network. The purchase (which cost the telecoms giant A€250m) is part of a two-pronged approach to bolster its status in Australia against its main competitor, Telstra. The other part of this strategy is the introduction of the new virtual phone provider Gomo, a budget mobile provider that Optus parent company Singtel has been operating in Singapore since 2019 and is also available in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

How does this affect Amaysim?

The good news for new and existing Amaysim customers is that it will remain an independent brand and "customers will continue to benefit from Optus' national premium network." Considering the added power behind Amaysim now, we can probably expect it to introduce a more affordable alternative to Optus' more premium plans, in the same way that Virgin Mobile did before it. While this means we're unlikely to see 5G connectivity with Amaysim any time soon, we expect it to continue to offer affordable SIM-only options with decent data inclusions, no lock-in deals, and occasional promotions for new and existing customers.

Climb the Gomo

As mentioned, the other element of Optus' new mobile strategy is the launch of Gomo in Australia, and while the telco currently only has a prepaid plan available, it strikes a solid balance between data and cost with a great introductory offer. .
