OnePlus 10: what we want to see

OnePlus 10: what we want to see
The OnePlus 10 is the next big smartphone we've been expecting from the Chinese tech company now that the OnePlus 9T has been confirmed to be non-existent. This upcoming premium smartphone will likely launch with a Pro sibling in the first half of 2022 as part of the wave of high-end smartphones earlier in the year, with the Samsung Galaxy S22, Xiaomi 12, and Oppo Find X4. be close contemporaries and rivals. . We haven't heard too much about the OnePlus 10 yet, there are a few leaks, which we'll share below, but the rumors are likely to start soon, especially in the New Year ahead of the phone's debut. We've also put together a wish list of features we want to see in the OnePlus 10, including changes from previous phones and added extras from competing devices, which would give the OnePlus 10 and 10 Pro a better chance of getting an excellent review. Aim.

Come to the point

OnePlus 10 launch date and price

The OnePlus 9 launched in March 2021 and became available to purchase in most regions, including the US and UK in April. As OnePlus operates on an annual cycle, it stands to reason that we could see the OnePlus 10 launch in the same window in 2022. The company doesn't sell its phones in Australia, so don't expect a OnePlus 10 version there. Price-wise, the OnePlus 9 series started at €729 / £629 (around AU$940) for the lowest base model, and went up to €1,069 / £929 (around AU$1,400). line Pro, so expect a price range between these numbers for the phones. Sure, the new phones could slightly raise or lower the price, but since the OnePlus 10 doesn't look like much of a reinvention, we wouldn't expect such a change.

News and rumors

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

(Image credit: Magnus Blix) Everything we've heard about the OnePlus 10 so far has to do with how it looks, both hardware and software. OnePlus itself has confirmed that the 10 series phones will launch new software, which will combine the company's own fork of Android called OxygenOS, with that of its sibling Oppo's ColorOS, following the merger of the companies. The OnePlus CEO said that the new software will combine "the fast, smooth, and load-free experience of OxygenOS, with the stability and rich functionality of ColorOS." Also, a leak suggests that the OnePlus 10 and 10 Pro will be quite similar in design to their Series 9 equivalents, with just a bit of polish here and there. OnePlus phones don't have the most radical designs in the world, so it's no surprise.

What we want to see

This wish list for the OnePlus 10 series is based on what we did and did not like about the OnePlus 9 series, and what the smartphone competitors are doing.

1. A renaissance of zoom photography

Some phones come with impressive zoom cameras, like the Mi 11 Ultra with its 48MP 5x zoom camera or the Huawei P50 Pro with its 64MP 3.5x zoom. The OnePlus 9 didn't even have a zoom camera, and the Pro's Snapper was a relatively meager 8MP 3.3x offering. Sure, it's not that great, but if you're spending a lot of money, you'll want a little more than that. We'd love to see the OnePlus 10 have a telephoto lens, even if it's only 12MP or 2x zoom, with the OnePlus 10 Pro sporting a periscope snapper with 4x or 5x zoom and a high-resolution sensor. While even that wouldn't help the Pro compete with the big dogs, since the S22 Ultra is likely to have super zoom and the Xiaomi 12 possibly has a Pro sibling as well, it would at least be more worth its cost.

2. Expandable storage (or more)

OnePlus 9

(Image credit: Truls Steinung) The only "con" our OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro tests had in common was a lack of expandable storage. So if you bought a 128GB smartphone, you can't expand the space with a memory card and instead have to rely on cloud storage if you want more. While expandable storage isn't necessary for most users, power phone users—the kind who'd probably buy a Pro phone, for example—may want extra space for photos, files, or lots of apps. Alternatively, perhaps the storage space could be improved. OnePlus 9 phones come with a maximum option of 256GB, which is a lot, but not a lot compared to the iPhone 13. Some people just need a lot of storage space.

3. Faster charging

Both OnePlus 9 phones have 65W charging, which is very fast compared to your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy devices... but not as fast as competitors from companies like Xiaomi or Huawei. Sure, 65W is faster than most people will need, but some power users will probably appreciate the ability to charge a smartphone in even less time. For example, the recent Xiaomi 11T Pro can power on in just 17 minutes. Maybe OnePlus could use that kind of super-fast power in the 10 Pro, or at least find a competitive power speed to keep up with the competition.

4. Better colors

OnePlus 9 launch

The green OnePlus 9 Pro was the only vaguely interesting member of its family. (Image credit: OnePlus) If you look at the color options for the OnePlus 9 series, or indeed most of the company's devices in general, you'll see the usual range: black, white, maybe a light blue. It has nothing interesting. We'd love to see OnePlus follow suit with iPhones and get a little weird with their colors. Let's see the pink. Let's see red. Let's see the gold. Of course, dynamic phones are known to sell pretty poorly compared to phones with boring colors, but in a world where most smartphones look nearly identical, brands will sooner or later have to look to color to stand out. .

5. Something to come from this Hasselblad cooperation

In 2021, OnePlus announced that it would be partnering with Hasselblad for 9-series cameras. Many phone companies are partnering with camera brands for their snappers, but it was unclear what exactly the partnership was. Hasselblad would bring the OnePlus 9. In the end, it turned out... not much. However, OnePlus has suggested that this cooperation will take some time to come to fruition, with the OnePlus 9 series being just the first of many phones to benefit from the collaboration. Hopefully, with the OnePlus 10 series we will see the fruits of OnePlus and Hasselblad's labor. We may see new camera modes or lenses as they impress us. Months after the OnePlus 9 launched, we've seen some Hasselblad-focused features on phones, and it would be great to see the OnePlus 10 launch with something like this.
