Nvidia RTX 4080 GPU leak disappoints some gamers, but let's not get carried away

Nvidia's RTX 4080 graphics card with 16GB of VRAM, the top-end model, as opposed to the 12GB version, was spotted in an alleged 3DMark benchmark, giving us an idea of its gaming performance .

Now, we need to make it clear from the start that it's just that, a performance notion, more on that later, and we also need to be careful not to assume it's genuine. This could be wrong, and as VideoCardz (opens in a new tab), who pointed out the benchmark, points out, there are questions about how a working driver that supports the GPU was obtained. (Unlike the upcoming RTX 4090, the RTX 4080 graphics cards don't come out until November.)

So there are big question marks around this, and the source, the Chiphell Forums (opens in a new tab) in China, isn't the most reliable either, although it caused some real leaks in el pasado.

In graphics scores (at 4K resolution), the RTX 4080 reportedly hit 3DMark, which was 17,465 on FireStrike Extreme and 13,977 on TimeSpy Extreme. Looking at the RTX 3080 (12GB) benchmark scores, this makes the RTX 4080 around 50% faster on both counts.

Another 3DMark Port Royal result was also highlighted, with the RTX 4080 hitting 17,607, which is around 45% faster, so again in the same ballpark.

As a side note, in the images provided, the specs are shown with the RTX 4080 with a 2,5GHz boost clock.

Analysis: Let's wait and see, but certainly pricing concerns abound

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, as we always remind people with these types of leaks, this is just a synthetic benchmark - what we really need to judge GPU benchmarks in real games, and a wide range of so do they (as results can vary widely between games and, indeed, graphics settings).

In fact, there is a gaming benchmark delivered by this leak in the form of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, where the RTX 4080 hits 128fps at 4K resolution. Although we don't have a point of comparison for this, and none of the ins and outs of graphical details, at first glance it looks like a pretty decent result.

While some people online were a bit disappointed with the 3DMark scores here, they are in line with what we really expected, and what we also need to remember is that there are likely to be some weird drivers in play. the RTX 4080 Release Driver, the GPU will surely be faster to some extent. And of course that's before we start talking about other benefits like DLSS 3 which seems to be a huge boost for games that support the technology (although RTX 3000 GPUs won't have that) elsewhere though this may happen eventually with the Ampere range. ).

Of course, this whole leak could be made up, but there's a decent amount of footage and footage here, so if it's fake, someone has gone to a lot of trouble (careful, this wouldn't be the first time this has happened). I pass). So let's be wary of this leak, and if true, equally wary of the potential performance the RTX 4080 achieves here, as the GPU will be faster at launch (or something would be very, very wrong).

The likely reason there has been a negative reaction to this leak in some quarters is to look at this approximate 50% yield increase and compare it to what is perceived to be a large increase in price. But in reality, if we're currently looking at the cheaper RTX 3080 12GB models (the GPU used in the performance comparisons above), the RTX 4080 represents a relative price increase of around 60% for this 50% performance increase. %.

This still means that the Lovelace GPU is more expensive in terms of performance per dollar, but not by that much. And hopefully, as mentioned, when the full speed of the released RTX 4080 is reached, it could be more or less comparable to an overall performance value proposition.

Which is still not good, mind you, because graphics cards are still overpriced in our book, and many others' tomes, and of course, there's also the reality that the 4080GB RTX 16 may be more expensive. than the MSRP. when you first break coverage. However, we seriously hope not, but these days it seems almost unrealistic to expect recommended prices to hold when launching a GPU. Initial stock levels will of course be a determining factor here...
