Nvidia's Updated 3080GB GeForce RTX 12 May Be Available To Pre-Order Today

A French retailer has apparently confirmed that pre-orders will be available later today for the GeForce RTX 3080 with 12GB of GDDR6X memory, an upgraded version of the original RTX 3080 graphics card.

Nvidia unveiled a couple of new desktop graphics cards at CES 2022: the RTX 3090 Ti and RTX 3050, though things have been pretty quiet regarding the announcement of the updated RTX 3080.

As Videocardz reported, French retailer Materiel.net announced in a now-deleted tweet that it will start taking pre-orders today at 3pm CET (2pm GMT / 9am EST / 6am PST) for the new GPU, despite the fact that No official announcement made by Nvidia itself.

It's no surprise that Team Green doesn't want to launch it on the same stage as the other two new GPUs announced at CES 2022, as the new version of the 3080 will apparently only have a slight increase in CUDA cores, bumping it to 8960 of the 8.704 cores. the current version of the RTX 3080, as well as a TDP increase of 350 W from 320 W.

As usual with rumours, don't take any of this as gospel until we get an official announcement from Nvidia itself - although we've heard previous speculation that the 3080GB RTX 12 was initially slated for a CES reveal - but that was pushed back to January 11.

We've reached out to Nvidia to confirm some additional details, such as whether the GPU will also be available for pre-order in other regions and a possible MSRP. If you're based in the UK or at least Europe, it might be a good idea to keep an eye on your favorite retailers for a pre-order announcement.

Analysis: Don't Get Too Angry

The 3080GB RTX 12 was first rumored in December 2021 with much of the same spec information we're still seeing in more recent leaks, so CUDA core and TDP expectations seem likely, but that makes it a very minor upgrade from the original RTX 3080 graphics. processor.

In fact, Nvidia may have originally planned to scrap plans to create it, with Igor's lab reporting last month that it may not be announced after all. It's not uncommon for early graphics cards to go back and then back behind the scenes before, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Removing your Tweet from Materiel.net could also mean different things: an embargo has been released and broken, Nvidia wants it to be a quiet release given the minimal difference between models (or possible low stock), or nothing is just released today. absolutely.

Since this is such a small update to the original RTX 3080, we wouldn't bother looking into one if you already have a current RTX 3080 in your system. . It's not something that closes a 'gap' between the RTX 3080 and 3080 Ti, and we wouldn't need anything to do it anyway given the variety of GPUs on the market today. If you're still in the market for a GPU, this may be worth considering, especially if the price is right.

We still need more stock and availability of existing RTX 3000 cards, and at a more affordable price, with prices still highly inflated even for older models of AMD and Nvidia hardware. Sadly, it looks like the component shortages and supply issues aren't going to go away anytime soon, as Nvidia doesn't expect things to get any better for at least the next six months.
