Newton Mail gets a new lease on life

Professional email client Newton Mail got a new lease on life after nearly going out of business for the second time. The service was originally shut down last month after the previous owners, Essential, decided to step down, but now it looks set to be revived under new owners. Newton Mail has proven popular due to a number of nifty features and elegant design, despite being priced at €50 a year, which for many is extremely high when various mail services are available for much less or completely free. The new owners have stated that they intend to follow Newton Mail's previous paid model and have announced that the same apps will work as they have in the past.

The new bosses are Maitrik Kataria and Justin Mitchell, who are from the software world and are big fans of the messaging service. To build a profitable business that can survive, Kataria and Mitchell suggested rolling out new features like dark mode within three to six months. They also promised to set up a forum to facilitate community discussions about service issues and new features. Other features promised by the new team include improved privacy standards, the ability to delete account and take ownership of data, the integration of PGP-based encryption, and the transition to GDPR compliance. However, since Kataria and Mitchell are "not a well-funded VC firm" and are new to M&A, they have an emergency plan. The duo have promised to open source Newton Mail and find a way for self-hosted servers to support the product indefinitely in the event of a problem. Kataria and Mitchell said they have attracted the trust of competitors like Superhuman, Polymail, MailSpring, Spike, Spark, Boomerang that have higher subscription fees than Newton Mail.
