Netflix's New Series Is Getting Me Serious On Spider-Verse Vibes

Netflix has unveiled your first look at Entergalactic, a new animated series starring Kid Cudi, Jessica Williams, and Timothée Chalamet, and it looks absolutely stunning.

The Netflix show, slated for release later this year, is billed as an adult animated music television series that will tell the story of two young New York-based artists who meet and fall in love.

Granted, the series' brief plot synopsis makes it pretty unoriginal, but there's plenty to get excited about in Entergalactic. Not only does the animated show have an absolutely stacked cast, but its visual style and tone are irresistibly beautiful. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's as awesome as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (and its upcoming sequels) or any other Netflix animated series on Arcane.

Still not convinced? Take a look at the trailer for the Netflix series, which was revealed on the third day of Netflix Geeked Week 2022:

You know what I mean? It has that summery, spicy, painterly aesthetic that Into the Spider-Verse and Arcane are famous for. It looks like a comic come to life, with a likely combination of rotoscoping, hand-drawn style, and two-for-one animation, a process where each frame is held for two frames (per second of footage) instead of one. - giving Entergalactic an unusual but highly satisfying art design.

This combination of techniques was pioneered by Sony Pictures Imageworks for the award-winning film Into the Spider-Verse, but it clearly had a huge impact on the animation industry. Arcane's unique combination of anime-like 2D and 3D animations, along with the hand-painted CGI style used for the Netflix film The Mitchells vs The Machines, shows that Netflix wants studios to experiment with different forms of animation to distinguish their competitor's projects. . Both projects won numerous awards on the 2022 awards circuit, with both earning top honors at the 49th Annual Annie Awards.

Entergalactic, then, looks set to be Netflix's next animated show that puts artistic individuality before the streaming giant's global audience. And, given the success of its aforementioned predecessors, there's no reason it can't follow in their footsteps and garner more praise for Netflix's animation department. Netflix subscribers have already begun weighing in on the series after its debut, with many falling in love with its art style (Opens in a new tab), intrigued by its talented cast (Opens in a new tab), and are according to our Into the Spider-Verse and Arcane comparisons (opens in a new tab).

Entergalactic was co-created by Cudi along with Ian Edelman (How to Make it in America), with first director Fletcher Moules helming the project.

Along with Cudi, Williams (Fantastic Beasts 3) and Chalamet (Dune), Entergalactic will feature top talent including Laura Harrier (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Vanessa Hudgens (Tick, Tick...Boom!), Christopher Abbott (Catch- 22), Jaden Smith (After Earth), Keith David (21 Bridges) and Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone, American Horror Story). Hip-hop and rap artists like Ty Dolla €ign and 070 Shake will also appear on the show.

Entergalactic doesn't have a confirmed release date yet, but it's expected to arrive in the fall of 2022. For those outside the United States, that's this fall (in the northern hemisphere) and spring (in climates del Sur).
