In a timed exclusivity deal between Activision and Sony, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will only feature its new cooperative zombie mode on PlayStation hardware. The publisher detailed the 12-month deal in a post on the Official PlayStation Blog, which locks out the new Zombies Onslaught mode on PS4 and PS5 until November 1, 2021. The fast-paced two-player multiplayer experience allows you to take on hordes of zombies in one of many locations derived from various multiplayer maps. A Dark Aether Orb limits you to a specific space on the map, and you'll need to defeat as many undead enemies as possible to power the Orb, which will then move. You'll have to stay within the Orb's protective field to avoid taking damage, but it also means you won't have much wiggle room when the zombies start arriving. And judging by the trailer below, many will be walking corpses to fight. Sony and Activision made a similar deal for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which kept the game's Special Ops mode off of other systems. The news didn't go particularly well at the time, apart from PS4 owners, and it's unlikely that this new silver hat deal will be well received as well. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X going head to head in November, the two companies will do everything they can to make their platform more attractive. However, when a game's value can be said to be reduced to other systems by blocking content, you have to wonder if these are the types of deals Sony or Microsoft should be actively pursuing. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will benefit from a 120fps option on both next-gen consoles, as well as ray tracing support.
