Netflix adds screen lock support to its Android app

Netflix has rolled out a new lock screen support feature on Android devices that would prevent accidental touch when watching popular online streaming services. The new functionality is now available on most supported devices via a server-side update. Users who prefer to connect to the OTT platform via their smartphone and stream to their smart TVs or use a streaming device will find this feature very useful, especially when forced to answer a call or check email. During this process, they could accidentally touch the Netflix app and interrupt viewing. Android users of the app might see the new button on the on-screen controls. It is called “Lock Screen” and it would become visible when watching a show or a movie. The feature disables all onscreen controls when active, leaving only one button that can unlock the screen. Users would be required to follow a two-step process whereby they would confirm the need to unlock the controls via a second tap on the screen. When the screen lock is on, most of the other controls like play, rewind, pause, forward and play, subtitles, etc. are disabled. However, users can zoom in and out on the screen or use standard Android navigation buttons or gestures to exit content delivery. The presence of this button protects against accidental screen contacts that are quite common with handheld devices, often called "big finger bugs", but users can continue to zoom in or out, or use Android navigation buttons or gestures to exit Of content. However, this can prevent accidental contacts for most of the things that are quite common in portable devices, given the proximity of our fingers to the screen at any time. There is no reference to when similar blocking support would arrive for the iOS version of the Netflix app.
