Namecheap abandons domain services for clients in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine

Namecheap left its Russian customers looking for a new domain registrar after deciding to terminate its services.

The company has asked those who use its services in the country to transfer their top-level domains to other providers before March 6 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In addition to their domain service, Russian customers will also be deprived of access to Namecheap Hosting, EasyWP, and their private messaging service.

Those who received the email shared it on Twitter, which read: "Unfortunately, due to the Russian regime's war crimes and human rights abuses in Ukraine, we will no longer provide services to registered users in Russia.

“While we understand that this war does not affect your own views or opinions on the issue, the fact is that your authoritarian government is committing human rights abuses and committing war crimes. Therefore, it is a political decision that we have taken and that we will take. respect. ”

TechRadar Pro has contacted Namecheap for further comment on the length of the decision, but the company has yet to respond.

According to Hacker News, Namecheap CEO Richard Kirkendall said the company didn't block any domains, they were just asking people to move.

"Free speech is one thing, but this decision is more about a government committing war crimes against innocent people we want nothing to do with," he added.

As of March 6, all websites that have not been transferred to another provider will be resolved as 403 banned.

Disgruntled Russian Namecheap customers took to Twitter to express their frustration with the decision, with many saying the six-day notice was too short.

Namecheap is not alone as various countries around the world have imposed different sanctions on Russia.

Intel and AMD have reportedly suspended chip sales to Russia following its invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
