Mozilla: Dark Mode is not a fad, and Firefox does it differently than Chrome

According to Mozilla, dark mode is much more than a passing fad, but dark designs should always be accessible and prioritize the user.

Firefox was one of the first major browsers to offer a dedicated dark mode, but Mozilla told LaComparacion that while it was an early adopter, it was taking a thoughtful approach.

"We first wanted to make sure that users controlled the appearance of their browser," said a Mozilla spokesperson. "As soon as someone chooses to use a dark theme, we also need to make sure that the Firefox interface works well and is accessible in light and dark modes.

"Finally, we wanted to adapt to a user's environment by matching the theme of the operating system."

It's not dark for the dark's sake.

Although some users prefer dark mode because it looks better, the Firefox team found that many users chose it for more practical reasons.

"The popularity of dark mode themes has increased in recent years," the spokesperson said. "One reason is that people stare at their screen longer, often in bright or dark environments.

"Dark mode can help reduce eyestrain in these situations, and dark mode has also been associated with longer battery life."

However, Mozilla makes no commitment to make your online experience as dark as possible. While Chrome will soon allow users to "force" dark mode on websites that don't officially support it (with mixed results), the sites will only appear in Firefox if the developers want it to.

"While we do not enforce dark mode on websites, we respect system preferences regarding dark mode and website use of preference-color-game * settings," explained the Mozilla spokesperson.

"If someone has dark mode enabled and a website supports it, we will use dark mode for that site (eg Twitter will be dark if dark mode is enabled)."

How to enable dark mode for Firefox

To enable dark mode for Firefox on Windows, MacOS, or Linux, open the main menu, click "Custom" and choose the desired option from the "Themes" drop-down menu at the bottom of the page. You can also download additional themes here.

If you are using Firefox for iOS, open the menu and tap & # 39; Night mode & # 39; to switch to the darker color scheme.

Firefox for Android does not offer dark mode yet, but it will change very soon. Firefox Preview, currently available for testing, is expected to replace the existing app in the coming months. By default it matches the theme of your device, but it can also be manually set to light or dark. To access the options, simply open the menu, tap & # 39; Theme & # 39; and choose between the three options.

If you prefer to stick with the existing Firefox for Android app right now, you can visit addons.mozilla.org and choose a third-party theme.
