Mobile download speeds are as tied to the manufacturer as they are to the network.

According to a new study, the actual speeds experienced by mobile users depend not only on the mobile network they use, but also on the type of device.

An Openignal report examined device speeds from the world's three largest smartphone manufacturers and revealed significant differences between them in many countries.

Samsung had faster speeds than Apple in 35% of countries, while Apple was higher at 17.5%. In the remaining 47.5%, none of the three manufacturers was the fastest, although Huawei was the fastest of the seven.

It is often difficult to quantify the degree of experience affected by the manufacturer and the quality of a smartphone.

But Opensignal, which records "real" readings from users' smartphones, has tested the speeds recorded by phones from Samsung, Huawei and Apple in 73 different countries.

It also took into account the price of the device (high-end, mid-range and low-end).

Although Opensignal analyzed readings from nearly 18,000 devices, using samples from the three largest manufacturers gave it a large enough dataset to allow comparisons in each country.

At the same time, device cost has a direct correlation to experience because newer or more expensive devices typically have more advanced components and support new network technologies such as aggregation. of supports.

This disparity will get worse until lower-end phones can access 5G networks.

When the results were broken down by price range, Apple was the best in the middle segment and Huawei was the fastest in the lower segment. In 25 countries, high-end smartphones were at least twice as fast as low-end smartphones. Unsurprisingly, high-end smartphones also outperformed the latency competition.

In the UK, Huawei and Samsung recorded an average of 25 Mbps, Apple recorded 20 Mb/s, while the highest-end smartphones manage 30.7 Mb/s, average speeds of 23.7 Mb/s, and the lowest 16,8 Mb/s. / s.
