Microsoft Edge is about to fully enter another dimension

Microsoft Edge Insider channels, which give members early access to new builds, are available on two additional platforms: HoloLens 2 and Windows 10X. While Microsoft has already demoed its flagship browser on Windows 10X, this is the first time Edge Chromium has appeared on the company's HoloLens mixed reality platform. HoloLens 2 headset users will now be able to enjoy the full range of features offered with the new Edge browser, including preview features not currently available in stable releases.

Microsoft Edge for HoloLens 2

Running on Windows Core OS (WCOS), HoloLens has so far been unable to run legacy Win32 apps, including the new Microsoft Edge browser. For this reason, HoloLens 2 users had to settle for the older HTML version of Edge, which offers some of the advanced features that have allowed Edge Chromium to capture a significant share of the browser market. these last months. However, the MSIX version of Edge posted on Insider Channels addresses this interop issue, using a SHIM library to run the app as if it were native to WCOS. The Insider program is divided into three streams: Beta (major updates every 6 weeks), Dev (updated weekly), and Canary (updated daily). Naturally, the Beta Channel offers the most stable Edge preview experience, while Canary offers the most experimental features in their infancy. HoloLens 2 headset owners and anyone with access to a Windows 10x emulator (the operating system is not yet generally available) can install Edge through any of the three channels, depending on their personal preference. The arrival of Edge Insider channels on HoloLens also suggests that an MSIX for the Xbox platform, also based on WCOS, could be landing soon, though Microsoft hasn't released a statement on the matter.
