Microsoft announces new features for SharePoint and OneDrive

At its annual SharePoint conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft announced the addition of new features to SharePoint and OneDrive for business.

The company began its presentation with the announcement of SharePoint hosting sites that it describes as "employee experiences" that are integrated into the mega-menu on SharePoint intranet portals. These landing pages allow employees to share and comment on articles, videos and other internal documents based on their role and permissions, from their desktop computer or through the desktop view. Starting the SharePoint mobile app.

SharePoint base sites are connected to the enhanced SharePoint home page, formerly known as SharePoint. The new home page features improved navigation, information about site activity, document views, and content that users have saved for later.

Users will also be able to search for files, contacts, org charts, internal sites, conversations, locations, tools, and answers to common questions using a new search bar with one-click access to Microsoft Search. The search bar works with hundreds of third-party applications available on computers, as well as integrated solutions built with the SharePoint Framework.

Differential sync for OneDrive

Although differential sync is currently available for Office 2016 files stored in OneDrive for Business, Microsoft has announced that this feature will be available for all file types in OneDrive later this year.

Differential syncing is essentially the software's ability to sync only those parts of files that have been modified in the cloud, as opposed to entire files. This helps companies save time because they do not have to wait to download an entire file, but also to increase productivity.

OneDrive on the web also allows customers to preview more than 320 file types, including 360-degree images and AutoCAD DWG files. Now that OneDrive supports comments on non-Office files, collaborators can now edit any type of file with notes.

Finally, Microsoft announced that its business video service, Stream, had been improved on iOS and Android, with better check-ins, downloads, and sharing. Employees can now also insert surveys, polls, or quizzes directly into videos using Microsoft Forms.
