Microsoft admits there is a serious problem with Windows 10

Microsoft has quietly acknowledged that some of the latest updates to Windows 10 are causing serious problems on some PCs. According to the company, the KB4557957 and KB4560960 updates, which are said to be cumulative updates that bring many security fixes to Windows 10, instead find a critical issue with the local security authority process. This has caused some computers to randomly reboot, with only a "your PC will automatically restart in a minute" warning message. This can be extremely frustrating as it means you have to quickly save any work you have open. It is not only annoying, but it can also lead to data loss if you don't save time.

Microsoft is on the case

The good news is that this problem, while serious, does not seem to affect many PCs. Microsoft is also aware of the issue and has updated the KB4560960 documentation to advise it, stating that "the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) file (lsass.exe) may fail on some devices" and that users may experience an error message stating "A critical system process, C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, has failed with status code c0000008. The machine should now restart." While it is good that Microsoft has recognized this problem, there is no Official fix for now, with documentation simply stating that "Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in a future release." Anyone suffering from this issue hopes that the resolution will come soon. Having a PC that has to reboot at random times is incredibly frustrating and could render the machine unusable. To avoid this, you can try uninstalling the KB4557957 or KB4560960 update, depending on what you have installed. See our guide on how to uninstall a Windows 10 update for more information.
