Marvel's Spider-Man had ditched multiplayer and it sounds amazing

Insomniac Games has apparently released a multiplayer mode for Marvel's Spider-Man, according to a recent data mine.

Arriving on PC last week, fans quickly began mining code data for Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. Discovered by Twitter user (Opens in a new tab) DniweTamp (via Reddit (Opens in a new tab)), this data miner discovered files pointing to co-op and multiplayer notifications, part of which reads " If it is configured and cooperating." It seems that we have seen two Spider-Men go head to head to become the "Superior Spider-Man".

According to these files, player two would have controlled Miles Morales, using his unique move set from Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Detailing this further, DniweTamp later shared the code that lists Player 1, Player 2, Red Team, Blue Team, Character 1, and Character 2. When put together, this suggests that Insomniac Games originally planned a PvP mode. , watching Miles confront Peter. Parker. .

Since that announcement, more details have emerged about what Insomniac Games had planned. According to VGC (opens in a new tab), references to a PvE mode known as "Free For All" have also been spotted, and it appears that multiplayer would have been accessible in a separate game mode. If you're curious to know more, you can find the direct code in the Twitter thread above.

A second chance?

It's hard to say why Insomniac Games removed multiplayer from the finished game. Maybe it didn't fit the developer's overall vision anymore, or maybe it didn't work well on the original PS4 hardware. There has never been public acknowledgment that multiplayer has been considered, so at this point all we can do is speculate.

However, while the PlayStation Blog (opens in a new tab) referred to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as a single-player experience, there's a good chance we could see that return in the sequel. Released the next year as a PS5 exclusive, the reveal trailer focused on Peter's fight alongside Miles. Facing off against various thugs, this trailer ends with the surprise appearance of a dangerous yet familiar threat, Venom.

It's thought we'll be playing as Peter and Miles at different times, but while I generally prefer the single-player campaign, I'd love to see co-op adopt that formula. Even though it's separate from the main game, there's something exciting about surfing the web through New York with a friend, competing to be the best Spider-Man. I don't know how it would work, but I'm excited to see what the next game will bring.
