Marvel May Only Release Two MCU Disney Plus Shows In 2023

Updated: It looks like Marvel is already planning to announce multiple changes to its TV show lineup.

According to sources at The Hollywood Reporter (opens in a new tab), only two Disney Plus series, Loki season two and Secret Invasion, will clearly air in 2023. The X-Men 2023 animated series will also be released this year, however, according to Disney's first quarter XNUMX earnings presentation (opens in a new tab).

If these reports are to be determined, Echo, Ironheart and What If...? epoch two will be delayed to two thousand twenty four. Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which is filming today, will also likely be pushed back to XNUMX. It's unclear how other shows, like the highly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again, will be affected.

Disney did not respond to TechRadar's request for comment on the alleged changes to the release schedule.

The original story continues.

Marvel president Kevin Feige has agreed that the studio's approach to the release schedule of its TV shows is changing.

In a lengthy interview with Entertainment Weekly (opens in a new tab) (EW), Feige found that Marvel's upcoming slate of Disney Plus shows is disorganized and rather unwieldy. Going forward, the studio plans to make sweeping changes to its release schedule, allowing future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series to breathe and shine.

Initially, Feige was asked what Marvel had learned about creating and launching TV shows since the time WandaVision, the first MCU series, began in January XNUMX. In his reply, Feige pointedly mentioned a recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) parody, which poked fun at how many shows Marvel was producing, before acknowledging that Marvel was reassessing its approach to TV.

“I think one of the most powerful things about being at Marvel Studios is that these movies and shows are in step with the times,” Feige said. "It's harder to hit the spirit of the season when there's so much product and so much 'content', as they claim, which is a word I hate. But we want Marvel Studios and MCU projects to really stand out and stand out. So , people are going to see that as we move into Phases XNUMX and XNUMX. The pace at which we launch the Disney Plus shows will change so that each one of them can have a chance to shine.

When asked if Marvel intended to separate its Disney Plus offerings or develop fewer TV shows than before, Feige replied: "I think both."

Feige's comments are sure to be music to people's ears.

Desde que WandaVision launched Marvel Phase cuatro, los entusiastas y los critíticos han commentado de regular form sobre la lista poco a poco más completa de películas y programas de Marvel TV. The cuatro phase included diecisiete projects – seven largos, eight series and two television specials – and, given the mixed reception that many of these productions have received, MCU fans believe that Marvel has begun to favor quantity over the calidad.

With at least 2023 Marvel Phase 4 movies and shows scheduled to begin between February XNUMX and September XNUMX, and XNUMX Marvel Phase XNUMX movies already announced, some industry analysts and enthusiasts think it's not going to happen. It's going to be quite a while before superhero fatigue wears off (if not already for some).

However, Feige's comments give hope that Marvel is learning from its Phase four failures. It has already altered its release date schedule in light of Blade's development issues. Meanwhile, the Echo standalone series would be pushed back to 2025, certain MCU animated shows including Spider-Man: Freshman Year could end up being scrapped, and even Marvel's Phase Six slate could be moved from 26/2026 to 27/XNUMX.

Based on Feige's suggestions, we should wait for more movies and shows to be delayed, and many would appreciate it. 3 Marvel movies and two (or 3) Disney Plus shows is more than enough MCU content to consume in a twelve month period. If Guardians of the Galaxy three, The Marvels, Loki season two, and Secret Invasion are the only other projects releasing this year, we'd be more than happy. The likes of Ironheart, Echo and What If...? Season Two, which is also scheduled for 2023, can wait, and it will also give his fan and team more time to do their best.

Feige's downside, however, is the desire of Disney, or rather returning CEO Bog Iger, to expand his profitable franchise. In a recent CNBC interview (opens in a new tab), Iger asserted that Disney will "watch even more" at its highest-grossing IPs, including the MCU, Avatar, and Star Wars.

Feige and Iger have a strong working relationship: It was Iger who stepped in to save Feige from being (and shockingly) fired in XNUMX. However, with Feige hinting that Marvel will de-fat their movie and TV lineup, and Iger pushing to release more projects on his site, the pair will need to find something in common if the MCU is to continue to thrive and return to normal after a few years. middle years, at least critically.
