Mac Pro vs Chrome: 1.5 TB of RAM can it cope with Google's memory?

Take a shiny new Mac Pro loaded with a staggering 1.5TB of system RAM – how do you push such a machine to its limits? Forget about the usual stress tests or cumbersome benchmarking utilities – all you have to do is open a lot of Chrome tabs. How many of these browser tabs can a 2019 Mac Pro full of memory handle? Here's what Jonathan Morrison decided to find out in a YouTube video (Morrison is a prominent Apple tech critic on YouTube, and one of the few who sent in a first Mac Pro to play with). As it turns out, Morrison managed to launch 6,000 tabs in Chrome, not just blank tabs, but actually ran a variety of proper web pages (opened via script), which consumed almost the entire memory of the PC system, with a spike in overall usage. of RAM to 1,49 TB. Apple's victory is due to the fact that Mac Pro (and macOS) did not crash while performing this feat and continued to function normally; in fact, I was still able to seamlessly multitask between a few other apps running at the same time.

TKO

Although the same cannot be said of the Google browser. With 6000 tabs open, one of the Chrome processes became unresponsive. Although the browser didn't actually crash, it appeared to crash, and when Morrison forced the unresponsive process to shut down, every instance of Chrome crashed. And not surprisingly, upon reopening, Chrome was unable to restore all (or even any) tabs. Morrison found that with around 5,000 tabs, the machine worked very well, and he was able to switch freely between the different tabs. So at the end of this grudge match, the winner, perhaps a TKO, was the mighty Mac Pro. Morrison says he could repeat the experience with other browsers like Firefox or even Safari, so we could see other similar videos on the future, which could make for interesting comparisons Via Wccftech
