Love it or hate it, Epic Games Store makes money

There haven't been many stores that have encountered as much fervor and controversy as the Epic Games Store. But no matter how much the enemies scream on the rooftops, the window continues to collect money. The online game store raked in €681 million for PC gamers in 2019, according to the infographic sent out by Epic Games. We're assuming it's not as much money as what Valve brought in via Steam (although a report from developer No More Robots suggests that Steam sales may see a big drop). Epic's number of sales is even more impressive when you remember that it was handing out free games throughout 2019. In total, Epic offered 73 free games last year, and these games have been downloaded more than 200 million times. So it's not surprising that the Epic Games Store currently has 108 million users. It doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon either. Epic has announced that its free games program will continue throughout 2020, which is expected to bring even more users to the platform. Of course, this will also be supported by the continued exclusivity strategy that Epic has been using for some time. It was certainly a controversial decision, and one we here at TechRadar don't necessarily endorse, but it's hard to deny that it works when looking at the numbers. Epic already has several exclusive games for 2020, including Predator Hunting Grounds and Godfall, but none are quite as big as Borderlands 3. That could change, though, and we'll have to wait and see how big Epic gets. The game store may arrive in 2020. If business as usual, Epic could knock on Valve's door to become the largest digital game distribution service.
