'Like Something Spy Kids': Marvel fans can't forget MODOK's design in Ant-Man 3

The latest trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has given Marvel fans a lot to be excited about, but no one can agree on the design of any particular villain.

The teaser, which began online on January 3, gave us our best look yet at the Marvel Phase Five movie, which hits theaters around the world on February XNUMX. -Man and the Wasp: The Official Quantumania Trailer offered a master class in how to create excitement among a fan base. You can read more about what's shown in our Ant-Man XNUMX trailer breakdown article.

While fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) agree that the movie's latest trailer makes it look totally awesome, there's one thing absolutely no one can agree on: MODOK's design.

Set to make his MCU debut in Quantumania, the iconic supervillain is one of Marvel's most unique villains. In short: MODOK is a giant head, with dwarf limbs and a small torso, who sits on a golden floating chair. In the comics, his appearance is due to an experiment gone wrong, with AIM scientist George Tarleton transformed into a bloodthirsty mastermind villain due to the Galactic Cube.

In the MCU, however, MODOK's origin story was changed. In Tarleton's place, MODOK is a mutated version of Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, the XNUMX Ant-Man villain. out of control. Nonetheless, Cross clearly survived, and whether or not it was Kang who saved him, Cross is now known as MODOK.

This was confirmed in the final trailer of Ant-Man 3, with the face of Corey Stoll, who played Yellowjacket and will play MODOK, clearly noticeable at minute 0:57 of the teaser:

Unfortunately, not everyone is on board with MODOK's final MCU design. While many may agree that he looks a lot more like his comic book counterpart than many expected, Marvel fans didn't stop at their roast of the MODOK aesthetic.

One of the most common (but no less joking) comparisons fans have made is that MODOK resembles Mr. Electric from the much discredited 3 XNUMXD superhero movie Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Yes, it's a real movie that actually came out at the turn of the XNUMXst century:

I said this quite a while back when the #Modok show came out on Hulu that if they ever got a live action Modok it would look like Mr. Electric from Sharkboy & Lavagirl... sounds like I was right lmao pic.twitter.com/vvMXBnNMlP10 January 2023

But wait, there is more. Given the stretched-out appearance of Stoll's face in the final MODOK design, other fans have suggested that she wouldn't look out of place in another 3D movie, such as Spy Kids:

Oh MODOK, looking like something out of Spy Kids. You are surely going to be played like a joke and you are going to die anyway. #AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania #MODOK https://t.co/c3dDOugWOS pic.twitter.com/Rtp1gKjokjJanuary 10, 2023

We also didn't think we'd see MODOK looking like the baby-faced sun from Teletubbies, a UK-based kids' TV show, but here we are:

Other MCU fans weren't as nice with their reviews. Twitter user Colerful_lol (opens in a new tab) simply called MODOK "ugly AF", paingamer1 (opens in a new tab) stated that the design was "worse than I thought", and BoxKingKevin stated that Marvel should have turned to Marvel of Crystal Dynamics. Game Avengers. to understand what fans expect from a CGI-based MODOK design:

Should we scare @Kevfeige @AntMan like we did Sonic to fix #MODOK and see how he performs in the @PlayAvengers game? 🤔 (KIKING YOU SHOULD NOT BULLY ANYONE YOU FOOL. Seriously, Modok in the MCU looks like George Lopez and I hate him 😭) #AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania pic.twitter.com/l1iwFTqbpZ Jan 2023, XNUMX

Things aren't much better on Reddit. XNightCrawlerBAMF (opens in a new tab) joked that MODOK "is the sexiest thing I've seen today", TheOwl1991 (opens in a new tab) commented on how absurd it looked, adding "it's just like it's photoshopped with Photoshop and somehow it didn't fit. helmet," and CityHog (opens in new tab) and MysteriousCommon6876 (opens in new tab) mocked up the design to look like "premade online animations where you upload a picture of your visage to a character and they send it to the people" or a "JibJab card.

Some fans believe that MODOK's design is as good as it could be. Well you know, considering what's happened.

On Twitter, Creepstar409 (opens in a new tab) asked fellow MCU fans how it would be possible to transform MODOK's comic book-accurate look into a plausible live-action supervillain, while JustinDunton (opens in a new tab) new tab) described MODOK's design as "Perfect". ". On Reddit, send_me_pineapples (opens in a new tab) defended Marvel for "how they didn't shy away from making it look weird." While TheRealMichaelGarcia (opens in a new tab) added: "I can't wait to see people bemoan his stupid and clumsy appearance, after bemoaning for months that Marvel turned him into a robot and not a giant floating head because they were so easily fooled by fan art."

There's still time for Marvel to polish up MODOK's design before Quantumania hits theaters, so there's a good chance it will look better than it did in the trailer. So the fans who laughed at his live performance might wind up eating their words if that turns out to be the case. Otherwise, you should applaud Marvel for sticking with MODOK's surreal aesthetic, whether you think it's good or not. If he doesn't, MODOK could take him out with those energy cannons strapped to his saddle. Only say.
