Lenovo Introduces Its Most Powerful Linux Laptops and PCs to Date

Lenovo has introduced a new line of Linux-compatible business laptops and PCs, which will come with the Ubuntu operating system pre-installed. The announcement marks a significant expansion of Lenovo's Linux portfolio, which the company has been developing in recent months. A range of approximately 30 new Linux-compatible devices will soon be available for purchase, including 13 ThinkStation and ThinkPad P Series workstations and 14 ThinkPad T, X, X1 and L laptops. All new models will ship with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS preloaded with the exception of the L series, which will run on version 18.04.

Currently, very few PC manufacturers offer devices with Linux pre-installed, and the process of manually loading a Linux distribution onto a machine can be tedious and time consuming. Lenovo's transition to Linux integration began with a partnership with FedoraProject, announced in April, which will see the release of ThinkPad P1 Gen2, ThinkPad X1 Gen8 and ThinkPad P53 laptops with the Fedora 32 Workstation distribution installed. At the time, the company promised to expand its selection of Linux-ready models in the future, a promise it duly kept. “Lenovo's vision of enabling smarter technology for everyone really means 'for everyone.' Our goal is to remove the complexity and provide the Linux community with the high-end experience our customers know us for,” said Igor Bergman, Lenovo's vice president of cloud and PCSD software. According to Lenovo, the new Linux-ready models will offer better accessibility to open source applications and libraries, as well as provide Linux users, ie developers, with a much wider range of options. "Lenovo's expansion of Ubuntu certified devices shows a strong commitment to the Linux and open source community," added Dean Henrichsmeyer, Canonical's vice president of engineering. "As data scientists and developers increasingly need Linux for emerging workloads, this collaboration enables organizations to equip their employees with long-term stability, increased security, and manageability. Simplified IT." The following Lenovo models will be available worldwide and will roll out in stages through 2021:
