Leaked new Apple TV 4K is bad news if you're hoping for a cheaper model

A new and improved version of Apple TV appears poised to give the game a boost, but it will dash hopes for a cheaper version of the streaming box, according to this new report.

The latest update from renowned Apple tipster Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter (opens in a new tab) claims that the new upcoming model will get an upgraded A14 processor along with an extra gigabyte of RAM.

Codenamed J255, the report doesn't add any more information to the rumored new Discovery-powered Siri Remote in iOS 16, but the two things together certainly give the impression that a new model is on the cards.

Gaming is becoming an increasing priority for Apple, and these improvements should provide better performance and capabilities for the company's increasingly impressive Apple Arcade subscription service.

However, the updated spec sheet may kill off the chances of a cheaper incoming version of the device, something we've been advocating here.

Hopes for a business model had been raised following a report by well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that a new Apple TV would launch in the second half of 2022 at a significantly lower asking price.

With tvOS 16 barely registering at WWDC 2022 earlier this year, fans of the device had considered Apple TV a somewhat overlooked platform, but these new rumors of a new model should at least allay fears that is about to be abandoned.

Review: Does Apple TV Really Need More Power?

The possibility of Apple releasing a cheaper version of its streaming box is something we've had here at TechRadar for some time.

With support for high frame rate HDR and seamless integration with other Apple devices, we've declared the Apple TV 4K (2021) to be one of our favorite devices to watch at home.

However, its hefty $199 price tag puts it out of reach for many home theater enthusiasts, and with Amazon's HDR-compatible Fire TV Stick 4K Max available for just $44.99 along with a host of other box competitors for less than €100, this can be hard to recommend. .

Still, one of the main separators of the Apple TV from other rival streaming devices is its ability to play quality games, and this potential new redesign will likely further set it apart from its rivals on that front, with the promise of even better graphics. on the maps. it should boast the super fast A14 processor.
