Jio launches Zoom-esque JioMeet | The comparison
Since the country went into lockdown mode, Reliance's Jio has been overloaded. Amid the wave of investments that helped the company become debt free 9 months ahead of the target, the company has now announced a new video conferencing tool to take on established players like Zoom, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, and more. Jio Platforms has been testing the JioMeet since May and it has now been introduced. It offers enterprise-grade security features like multi-device login, password protection for calls, screen sharing, and more.

JioMeet Features

The JioMeet app is available on all platforms including Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and even for the Chrome browser. The service is free for everyone, and unlike Zoom, you don't have a limit on free calls. The company claims that calls to JioMeet can last up to hours, but with a maximum of 100 users at a time. These calls can be made in HD resolution, although the website does not indicate whether the calls are end-to-end encrypted. We have reached out to the Jio team for clarification on this issue and will update this section once we have clarity on this issue. To ensure meeting security, calls on JioMeet are password-protected, and like Zoom, it also has a "waiting room" that ensures no unwanted participants can intervene in calls. For those who have already used Zoom, yes, the JioMeet app bears an uncanny resemblance to the first one. This Twitter thread highlights the similarities between the platforms. This resemblance is not limited to the interface. In fact, features like "Do Not Disturb" and "Safe Driving Mode" found in Zoom can also be found in JioMeet. Interestingly, JioMeet also allows users to take a call without signing up for the service. All the users need to do is to enter the meeting ID in the JioMeet app to join the video call session. This feature works on all platforms. JioMeet also supports multi-login feature that allows users to connect to 5 devices at a time with the same username and allows users to seamlessly switch devices during a call. Just like with any video calling app, JioMeet also allows users to share their screens and collaborate online.
