Iron Man returns to the MCU, but it's not what you think

Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man is returning to the MCU, just not in the way you might think, according to a new leak. Lego_Fulcrum, a leaker of unannounced Lego games, recently found out that Iron Man (and Downey Jr., by extension) is going to be a part of Marvel's What If... series on Disney Plus. On his Instagram page (via ComicBook.com) with his latest leak, Lego_Fulcrum posted an image of a still-announced Lego set, revealing Tony Stark in a Sakaarian Iron Man suit. What can we infer from this leak? In a forthcoming What Happens If...? episode, it seems that Iron Man, and not Thor, is transported to the planet Sakaar. For those who need a reminder, Sakaar is the planet seen in Thor: Ragnarok, ruled by the Great Professor Jeff Goldblum. Here, Thor is captured by the Great Professor and ends up fighting the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to amuse the people of Sakaar. The image of the Lego set also seems to show the Observer, the narrator of What If...? from Marvel and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, who was in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame. Analysis: Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man in Marvel's What if...

Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. What does all this mean for Downey Jr.'s return as Iron Man? If Jeff Goldblum's comments, in a XNUMX Buzzfeed interview, are anything to go by, Downey Jr. will return to voice him in animated Tony Stark fashion. “I went to Disney Studios and recorded the voice of the great professor for an episode of a show that is going to be on Disney Plus called What if…?” Goldblum stated at the time. "It's an animated version of every single Marvel character we know and love and this episode included The Great Professor and Iron Man, so Robert Downey is going to do a voice for this." Unless Marvel has radically altered its mind, Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man/Tony Stark for the last time. Why one last time? As Marvel fans will remember, Tony Stark died at the end of Avengers: Endgame. After battling Thanos' Infinity Stones during the final battle of the film, Iron Man uses them to finish off Thanos and his invading army, but the power of the Infinity Stones is too much for him and he soon dies. What if... from Marvel? will star Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, James Bond) as the Vigilante, a galactic being who rules over the Marvel Multiverse but rarely, if ever, interferes with events. The Watcher will recount the series, which will explore what would have happened during major events in the MCU that would have played out differently. So far we know of an episode where Peggy Carter takes the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, an episode where T'Challa is kidnapped by the Ravagers instead of Star-Lord, and an episode where Bucky Barnes fights a zombie superhero beautifully. epidemic. What if... from Marvel? is going to see multiple actors return to voice their MCU characters again, including Chris Evans, the late Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L.Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Hayley Atwell, Karen Gillan and Sebastian Stan. The Disney Plus series will begin streaming only on the Disney streaming platform in August.
