The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus could soon be in yellow

It looks like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be getting a new yellow color option very soon, alongside the current Blue, Purple, Midnight (Black), Starlight (Cream), and Red. Apple hopes this can boost sales of the two cheapest. iPhone 14 models.

This is from a source on the Chinese social network Weibo (opens in a new tab) via Mac Otakara (opens in a new tab) and MacRumors (opens in a new tab). While the initial tipper doesn't have much of a track record, MacRumors does, saying it's been understood that Apple is planning a product briefing next week.

While we can't be sure of any rumors or leaks until confirmed, Apple has a way of adding new iPhone colors this time of year: green for the iPhone 13 last year, and purple for the iPhone 12 the year before.

everything was yellow

As in the past, the goal here is to boost sales of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. We're now halfway through another iPhone launch, the iPhone 15, so now is the time to try to build a bit more interest in current phones.

This is especially important for the iPhone 14 Plus. While it was introduced to replace the iPhone 13 mini, which was barely flying off the shelves, word on Apple street is that few people are buying the iPhone 14 Plus.

Perhaps not surprising, given that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus settle for last year's Apple A15 Bionic chipset. Even Apple itself seems to prefer the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Review: More Colors Please

It's perhaps a bit surprising how much of a difference a new color scheme can make to a device's appeal; after all, all the internal components remain the same. The iPhone 14 in yellow will still run just as fast and take just as good quality photos and videos.

Or maybe it's not surprising at all: device aesthetics matter, and for some people at least, a phone's appearance is a major consideration when evaluating tier upgrade options. This yellow tint will definitely make the iPhone a bit more distinctive.

We're not entirely sold on the idea of yellow as a smartphone color. It's not one you see much of, and it immediately makes us think of various bodily fluids. On the plus side, there are connotations with the sun and... er... Lego figures? Or the Simpsons?

What we are sure of is that Apple's design team can be trusted to produce an eye-pleasing shade of yellow. More color options are always good for consumers, and we should be hearing about the new iPhone 14 in the coming days.
