IPhone 12 could be slimmed down with new screen technology

It looks like the iPhone 12 could be one of the biggest iPhone upgrades in recent memory - so far we've heard a lot of rumors and speculation, the latest supply chain news pointing to a new type of display technology. At least some iPhone 12 models will ship with LG-made OLED screens, according to The Elec, screens that have touchscreen circuitry built into the screen rather than on a separate layer. That means thinner and cheaper screens, possibly leading to a thinner iPhone 12, though we're not holding our breath for a particularly lower price. The same report suggests that LG is about to switch to the same LTPO (low temperature polycrystalline oxide) display technology used in the Apple Watch 4 and Apple Watch 5, which could potentially lead to more energy-efficient displays.

Screen time

It's thanks to LTPO that the Apple Watch 5 manages to maintain all-day battery life, even with an always-on display, so let's expect another battery boost with the iPhone 12. In fact, the technology could even enable option for an always-on display on future iPhones, a lock screen that's visible at all times, which is a feature high-end Android phones have had for a while. It's unclear if the LTPO update will roll out, though. well in advance for the 2020 iPhones. We may have to wait for the 2021 iPhones to still be on. We could get as many as five new iPhones this year, with four iPhone 12 models joined by an updated iPhone SE 2 device. Cameras and screen sizes are likely to be the main differentiators between them. Via MacRumors
