How Razer reinvents the wheel with the new Stealth Blade

This is the week of computer games, and that means we take the time to take care of everything that makes the desktop the most powerful gaming platform. And really, it's impossible to talk about the size of PC games without exploring all the unique devices and systems that make your experiments so wonderfully diverse.

And, of course, we don't talk about gaming devices without lifting Razer. Founded in 2005, Razer has always been at the forefront of PC gaming by creating some of the most iconic designs and even popularizing the RGB format. In fact, there are people who call this gaming computer titan "the apple of the PC game." Looking at laptops like the Razer Blade and Razer Blade Stealth, this brand isn't that far off.

So when we had the opportunity to speak with Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan at IFA 2019, we seized the opportunity. He dived into the spirit behind the new Razer Blade Stealth, a laptop we had a chance to play with at the tech fair, and explained how it is at the forefront of a new category of gaming laptops.

At the forefront of innovation

The Razer Blade Stealth saga began eight years ago, according to Min-Liang Tan.

"We called (that's the Razer blade), and we got a lot of criticism, we called it" the world's first real gaming laptop. "We had a bunch of people get said," Razer, you're just fuming because there are computers today. gaming laptops "and I said" no, they play luggables. "

If you look at the gaming laptop scene almost a decade ago, you can see where Tan came from. In his words, it's "because 8 or 9 years ago, all of these (gaming laptops) were 2 inches thick and nobody I really wanted one because they were so heavy that we were the first to do that, which is why I said we were releasing the world's first gaming laptop. "

The first Razer blade was not as thin and light as the current model, much less competitors like the MSI GS65 Stealth. But for its day, it was slim and very fast, but Razer still faced doubts.

Min told us that "people said" you are only making a niche, nobody will pay so much money for a lean and powerful one ", but today the whole industry has worked the same way". And we don't know about you, but we've certainly found that many gaming laptop manufacturers are starting to make devices that can fit on your lap. It seems that Razer also wants to stay this way.

"People used to say" you are only making a niche, nobody is going to pay so much for a lean and powerful one ", but today the whole industry has worked in the same way."

Min-Liang Tan

In fact, we've pointed to devices like the recent Alienware Area-51m, a desktop replacement device that allows users to upgrade the processor and graphics card. But, Razer is not interested. Min-Liang Tan, who heads up design at Razer, wants people to know that "I'm actually designing things that I want to use myself," so when I'm in the office, "I want something ultra modular stuff, I want something super powerful, I want to have Why? Because I'm sedentary, I'm at my desk, I'm at home and that's why I conceive it. "

But obviously this refers to the design of your laptop. "Now, I designed the Razer Blade primarily for one thing: I needed a laptop." At that time, laptops were very thick, very heavy. It's not the laptop I want, "he tells us," I want something I can travel with, I want something very light. But, because I want to play games I need something very powerful but thin and light at the same time. "

So basically you shouldn't expect a modular Razer laptop (or ever).

But didn't Razer have a concept desktop with modular components? Well yeah, but instead of becoming a product, according to Tan, "this technology, which was actually the modular type of switcher-type technology, CPU / GPU plug and play type, is actually the Razer Core." .

Razer is definitely more interested in making slim laptops that offer the most impact, rather than the more sophisticated desktop replacements for which a forklift is needed.

The Ultrabook game

Of course, because Razer is trying to make newer, thinner and lighter laptops to give gamers better options on the go, the Blade Stealth has appeared.

For a time, it was a gaming-oriented Ultrabook, but at the time of IFA 2019, Razer managed to insert dedicated graphics into it, completely transforming the device. .

At the show, Min told us, "Today, we are launching the world's first Ultrabook, 6 months later, I guarantee the entire industry will see Ultrabooks everywhere," just like Razer. released the first "real laptop game" 8 years ago. Now, we're definitely on the idea for a 13-inch gaming Ultrabook. Imagine a device the size of a MacBook Pro that you can pack and that lets you play the best PC games on the go. It is also the guiding principle of Stealth.

"(The Razer Blade Stealth) is designed for me," Tan said. "Since I'm in a different city every 5 days, I want something that I can charge and play without compromising my gaming experience."

He came up with the idea of a laptop saying "It's one thing to have to change all your settings, and something like that, but it's another thing." Being in a hotel room, you plug it in and play for an hour or two, you know, it's great.

Since I'm in a different city every 5 days, I want something to wear and play, but without compromising my gaming experience. "

Min-Liang Tan

In our time (albeit limited) with the new Razer Blade Stealth, we were able to run Wolfenstein Youngblood in 1080p. And, while playing with the medium-medium settings, not the high-caliber graphics that make the game sing on the right desktop gaming rigs, that's the same experience as on an All console with a device you can easily carry. in your backpack, which is undoubtedly Razer's design goal.

Razer is even working on a range of mobility devices in this direction. "Of course you can see our mobility line, which is working very well, we have the Atheris, which is a portable mouse with 2.4 GHz Bluetooth." And, while products like Atheris are obviously not as comprehensive as the more intense desktop peripherals, this is part of the plan, according to Min. "The laptop mouse is itself a matter of portability, so you sacrifice part ergonomics, that's why, because you have to throw it in your bag, you have to be able to carry it ".

We think this new version of Blade Stealth is just one sign of the transformation the game has undergone in recent years and we think it will be extremely popular with people who like to play their games in-game. fly. Overall, the future for gamers on the road is promising.

Looking to the future of Razer

We don't think Razer will embark on mainstream computing, to compete directly with the likes of Dell or Apple, and neither does Tan.

"I always thought Razer would never fit in, the general public will come to us," Tan said. "One day, we will watch sports at the Olympics, we will listen slowly, we will see players everywhere."

Also don't think that Razer plans to rest on its laurels anytime soon. When we asked Min-Liang Tan whether or not Razer would be ready to go, regardless of the trends that appear.

"Everything we did started with a niche, but we turned it into a category or an industry. When we invented the world's first gaming mouse, we didn't just invent a category, we have invented this entire industry," Tan said. Razer has obviously been at the forefront of the gaming space before, and now it's doing it again and will continue to do so in the future.

Whatever happens, Min assures us that gamers will remain at the forefront of Razer's concerns. "What makes me happier is that we just didn't want to sell, we just wanted to stay hyper focused on the player."

It's refreshing to see a computer hardware manufacturer, especially at Razer, willing to stay true to its roots, no matter how awesome the Razer 2-in-1 laptop or toaster is.
