Hogwarts Legacy won't include Quidditch

The upcoming Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy RPG won't feature Quidditch, but it will still let you fly on a broomstick.

The fictional fantasy sport has been a staple of the Harry Potter franchise since the first novel, and fans are eagerly waiting to see if it will make an appearance in Hogwarts Legacy. A new FAQ post (opens in a new tab) on the game's website confirms that players won't be able to try their hand at the sport when the game launches next year.

"Quidditch cannot be played at Hogwarts Legacy," the FAQ page says. "However, broomstick flying for traversal challenges and broomstick races is part of the game. Players can also fly broomsticks to explore new and familiar locations around Hogwarts castle.

Quidditch has long been a fan-favorite part of the Harry Potter universe, and even inspired a real-life sport that mimics the wizarding game. He featured heavily in the original novels and film series, and has appeared in some of the old Harry Potter video games from the last few decades.

But his omission from Hogwarts Legacy isn't too surprising. Recreating an entire fictional sport into an already great RPG is a tall order. Between designing all of the game's additional mechanics, creating unique animations, producing new dialogue, running the entire process through QA testers, and then finding a way to integrate it into the main game without feel marginalized, adding quidditch would not be an easy task.

It's not like you're totally broomless in the final game. Billed as an open-world RPG, Hogwarts Legacy will have you exploring the titular School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the nearby town of Hogsmeade, and the Forbidden Forest. Gameplay snippets (opens in a new tab) have already shown that you'll be able to visit these locations on the back of a flying hippogriff or on a magical broomstick.

It is possible, though not confirmed, that larger expansions for the game will be released after launch. Developer Avalanche has also created several DLC cosmetic packs as pre-order bonuses. Given Quidditch's popularity among Harry Potter fans and its strong association with the brand, we wouldn't be surprised if the fictional sport was added in some form via post-launch DLC.

Hogwarts Legacy will launch on February 10 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. But if Quidditch doesn't show up, don't expect Wizard Chess to show up either.
