HBO Max directs new TV show about John Constantine, with JJ Abrams

Soon there will be just as many live-action versions of John Constantine on screen as there are Spider-Men. The HBO Max streaming service is creating a new, darker version of the character for the small screen, and the show will be produced by JJ Abrams' Bad Robot company. The character, who hailed from the comic book Swamp Thing before getting his own lifelong book, Hellblazer, was previously played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film Constantine and Matt Ryan in the quickly canceled 2014 show of the same name. . However, Ryan's version of the character proved popular and was given a second life in the DC Comics Legends of Tomorrow television show, as well as various animated projects. Up-and-coming British novelist and screenwriter Guy Bolton has penned the show's pilot episode, and a writers room is apparently in the works for next month. This suggests that HBO Max really likes the series. Deadline reports that the show will include John Constantine as a young Londoner, with a "diverse hint" coming from the series. In the comics, Constantine is from Liverpool, UK. He is a warlock, exorcist, and general participant in the black magic side of the DC Universe. While his original comics were set in a different continuity than Batman, Superman and Co., around ten years ago DC merged him with the world of superheroes. It is not known when the program will be released.

HBO Max launches against superheroes to fight Disney Plus

HBO Max is owned by Warner Bros and therefore has wide access to DC superheroes. While CW shows like Arrow and The Flash have their fans, it's fair to say that Disney Plus has set the bar much higher with WandaVision in terms of production values and overall quality. DC shows on HBO Max should be a different matter. This new John Constantine is really just a new series of series; other series include Peacekeeper, a spin-off of the upcoming James Gunn film The Suicide Squad, starring John Cena. Another movie spin-off arrives in the form of Gotham PD, a prequel to The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. A series called Green Lantern Corps is also in the works, as is another Bad Robot/JJ Abrams affiliate series called Justice League Dark. This is in addition to the existing sequel to DC's HBO Max shows: Doom Patrol, the animated Harley Quinn and Titans. Collectively, will this be enough to grab the attention of comic book fans?
