After being hacked, SABC warns visitors not to leave their personal details on their TV license website. The website redirects visitors to phishing websites and the broadcaster said it is trying to fix it. "This issue has been prioritized and addressed with the urgency it deserves by the company's media and technology infrastructure division," the SABC said in a statement. The TV Licensing website is intended to be the portal through which licensees can pay their bills and those without a license can purchase one. The trick seems to come from a legitimate looking popup. When the popup is active, clicking anywhere on the license site will take the user to a phishing website that attempts to trick the user into entering their private information. However, the popup does not always appear and when it is not present, the site behaves as it normally would.
Stay safe on legitimate websites
This example shows that even legitimate websites can become a problem for an inattentive user. Although generally trustworthy, users can be tricked into going to suspicious sites. Here are some things to keep in mind when using the Internet.
- Never enter your personal information unless you are sure you know where you are going
- If a page you're on redirects to somewhere else you didn't expect, be suspicious
- Beware of pop-up ads
- Never enter competitions if they require a lot of detail on your part
- Always be skeptical
