Google Pixel 5a vs Pixel 6 leaks: what do we know about the upcoming Pixel phones?
The Google IO 2021 annual tech event is right around the corner, starting on May 18, and many eyes will be on the main event for a preview of the Google Pixel 5a or Pixel 6. These are the two Pixel phones that we plan to release sometime in 2021, although it's far from guaranteed that they'll show up on IO as Android 12 will be the big draw, it's certainly possible. Google's Pixel phones are undergoing major changes right now, as in 2020 it seemed like the company was trying to make some big changes going forward. The Pixel 5 wasn't a premium phone, like the Pixel 4, but rather a mid-ranger. We also got a look at the Pixel 4a 5G, an upgraded version of the Pixel 4a, which sits between that low-end phone and the flagship Pixel 5. So while it's harder than ever to guess what the Google Pixel 5a, the affordable version of the Pixel 5, or the upcoming flagship Pixel 6 will look like, we can let the rumors and leaks in. some on both phones right now. Below we'll show you all the leaks and rumored specs, comparing the phones as the leaks and rumors suggest, should any of the phones launch on Google IO. Take all of this information with a pinch of salt, as nothing has been confirmed yet.

Google Pixel 5a vs 6 release date and price leaks

Google Pixel 5

Google Pixel 5 (Image credit: Future) We haven't heard of any price leaks regarding the Google Pixel 5a or Pixel 6, and that's likely due to the aforementioned state of flux. It's really hard to predict how much a phone will cost if you don't even know if it's mid-range or premium. However, we typically hear price leaks fairly close to launch, meaning none of these phones will be available any time soon. Rumors currently suggest that the Pixel 5a will launch on Google IO; There are also reasons for this to happen, like the Pixel 3a launched at IO 2019, and the main reason the Pixel 4a didn't launch at the event in 2020 is that the event didn't take place that year. The Google Pixel 6 is much less likely to launch at the event, as the flagship phone usually lands later in the year. Never say never, sure, but don't hold your breath.

Design and display

We have heard that the Google Pixel 5a could have a very similar design to the Pixel 4a 5G. You can see the leaked renderings of 5a below.

The build appears to be plastic, something previous A-series phones were made of. The weakest of these images added that there was a 3.5mm headphone jack positioned on the top edge of the phone, and if you look closely you can see a small gap in the images indicating this. The Pixel 5a's display is apparently identical to the 4a 5G's, which is a 6.2-inch FHD+ panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. The Google Pixel 4a 5G was almost identical to the Pixel 5, with two key differences: the latter was slightly smaller and had a metal construction instead of plastic. We know a lot less about the design of the Google Pixel 6, but there's some interesting information to be found if you dig deep enough. First of all, the Pixel 6 is rumored to have an in-display fingerprint scanner: it's a technology that Google has so far eschewed using in its Pixel phones, and it's a big departure from the Pixel's rumored rear-mounted scanner. 5a. to have. Second, and this is far more iffy, the Pixel 6 could also have a front-facing camera built right into the display. We say 'dubious' because it's based on a patent that may not refer to the Pixel 6, but it's worth talking about anyway. There hasn't been a single rumor about the Pixel 6's display, and we've yet to find out if it's another small phone, like the Pixel 5, or if it's going up a notch in size. However, we can speculate: the mention of one-handed mode in Google's code implies that the phone is large enough to require software fixes, although it may refer to a Pixel 6 XL instead.

Cameras and battery life

While older Pixel phones were known to be photography powerhouses, oddly enough, this department is by far the least elusive of all, well, battery life aside. The only thing we've heard about the Google Pixel 6 is that its front-facing camera can record 4K video, a feature not many phones have. And that's it. Google tends to use relatively low-resolution sensors in its smartphones, opting instead to increase processing intelligence across the generations, so don't expect 48MP, 50MP or 64MP, let alone 108MP, snappers. As for the Pixel 5a, we've heard that the cameras will be identical to the Pixel 4a 5G, namely a 12MP main camera and a 16MP ultra-wide camera. Google may have accidentally revealed a snapshot taken with it. Our coverage of battery size or charging rumors will be brief, as there haven't been any. Considering that previous Pixel phones have occasionally been criticized for poor battery life, this is something important that we have yet to learn.

Performance and software

And now we're moving directly from the less leaky sections to the more leaky sections. The big news is in the chipset department, because for the Pixel 6 (and possibly the Pixel 5a as well), Google would be making its own chipset. This news was initially leaked and seemed unlikely, but more and more evidence is being released to support the information. A bespoke chipset could benefit the Pixel 6 as it would allow software and hardware to work in harmony. That being said, we've also heard some leaks of other chipsets for each phone. The Pixel 5a has been paired with the Snapdragon 765G and 780G, while the Pixel 6 has been paired with the Snapdragon 775 and 780G. They're all mid-range processors, and honestly, they're all pretty similar in terms of power. These chipsets were leaked early in the rumor cycle, while the bespoke chipset news is more recent, so it seems more likely that it will be used in at least the Pixel 6. The Pixel 5a chipset is still much older. the phone should land sooner.

Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL

Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL (Image credit: Future) Because of the way Google works, we'll definitely see both phones launching with 'stock' Android, just as Google designed it (without the changes that other phone makers are doing on their own devices). The Pixel 6 is likely to be the first phone to launch with the new Android 12. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Pixel 6 may have UWB, or ultra-wideband, technology, which is primarily used for location tracking. short range. However, we don't have much idea what function it could perform.

Wear

The broad strokes painted by the leaks tell us that 2021 is the year of the chipset for Google Pixel phones. We're likely to see the company launch its own processor, which could mean the phones are perfectly tuned to run Android at its best. Other than that, these phones don't appear to be huge changes from their leaked predecessors, with the Pixel 5a looking eerily similar to the 4a 5G. However, the less leaked Pixel 6 could bring big surprises. Finally, if possible, we'd go as far as to say 'likely', that the Pixel 5a will launch on Google IO in mid-May, we'll probably have to wait much longer until the Pixel 6 debuts.
