Google Drive undergoes a major security update

Sharing files with others in your organization is about to get a lot easier in Google Drive, as Google updated its cloud storage service with a new security feature. Admins can now define specific audiences with which users can share Google Drive files by link to protect organization data while making it easy to share files with the right colleagues. This feature originally launched in beta back in August of last year and Google has since made two major changes based on user feedback. The search giant has increased the maximum number of target audiences a user can recommend from three to five, and has also allowed admins to add any group as a target audience, including groups belonging to different organizations. This new feature will not only help improve security, but will also save Google Drive users time by reducing the need to manage sharing requests from multiple people.

Previously, administrators could choose to allow users to share files across their entire domain or with anyone who had the link in Google Drive. Now, along with target audiences, admins can set and recommend more granular link sharing options for users in their organization. This change will help improve security for businesses using Drive by making it more difficult to share information with users outside of your organization. To enable this feature, admins will need to find Drive's target audience settings by going to the Admin Console, going to Director, and clicking Target Audience. Here, they will be able to assign target audiences at the group or organizational unit level. Being able to quickly share links to documents is one of the main reasons many companies have moved their workloads to the cloud. However, sharing links with unwanted users can undermine an organization's security, which is why Google is rolling out this new feature for paid users of Google Workspace.
