Google Chrome will soon tell you how bad your passwords are

Making sure you have strong passwords has been a common security tip for some time, but now Google Chrome is looking to take things a step further with its latest update.

The browser is reportedly working on a new feature that will immediately show how strong or weak your passwords are.

Google clearly hopes to help users who are unsure about the security of their login credentials by building the password checker directly into Chrome, rather than users who have to rely on third-party services.

Discovered by About Chromebooks (Opens in a new tab), the tool is included in an upcoming version of ChromeOS, where it is explicitly named "Password Strength Indicator."

"Enables the password strength prompt when entering a password during a signup and password change flow," the description says, suggesting that the tool doesn't crash. It will only apply to users who create new passwords or when they change an existing password.

The feature is listed as "Approved (Opens in a new tab)", which means that it will currently be in development and testing, with a broader public release expected very soon.

Google Chrome has been committed to helping users stay safe online with a number of password-related tools in the past, including its built-in password manager.

In addition to storing existing passwords, the service also includes a password generator to help users create strong, unique and complex passwords for each of their online accounts. This tool can now also store notes with your passwords, allowing for additional reminders or context, as well as distinguishing between a work and personal account.

Chrome for Android users are also protected by Google's Duplex on the Web technology, which can automatically change any password it knows has been compromised in a hack or data breach, displaying a pop-up alert warning the user that be at risk. .

Alternatively, Google Assistant can take users to the change password page for particular services whenever they need to change their credentials or suggest a strong password.
