God of War 2 PS5: everything we know about the God of War sequel rumor

God of War 2 PS5: everything we know about the God of War sequel rumor
It's been over two years since the incredible God of War reboot was released on PS4, but we're already looking to the future of the hit PlayStation series. While Sony is keeping a low profile on the subject, the success of God of War means that a sequel (maybe another God of War 2?) is likely in the works. Additionally, Sony Santa Monica has posted job openings for various positions on its teams, a listing that clearly cites the God of War reboot. At this point, God of War 2 will most likely be coming to PS5 rather than PS4, so we've named this hub accordingly. So, with that out of the way, we've rounded up all the rumors and news about the God of War sequel for your consideration here. UPDATE: Will Kratos return on September 16 for the next big PS5 live stream? Here's how to watch the PS5 Showcase live stream, where we'll likely learn the console's price and pre-order details, and probably more about the game's lineup. Follow our blog live on PS5 Showcase.

God of War 2 release date

Image Credit: SIE Santa Monica Studio (Image Credit: Sony Santa Monica) Sony Santa Monica hasn't officially confirmed that God of War 2 (or whatever it's called) is in the works, but we hope a sequel won't be released until after the "Holiday 2020" release of the PS5. It is extremely unlikely that the game will release before Spider-Man: Miles Morales (late 2020) or Horizon Forbidden West (TBA 2021). Sony likes to scale their exclusive games. So we don't expect this one until 2021 or 2022. Either way, we expect God of War 2 to come to Sony's PlayStation 5, probably exclusively.

God of War 2 could be featured in today's PS5 Showcase event, which is expected to reveal the PS5 launch date and price, as well as new software. Cory Barlog recently changed his Twitter header to a redacted script, and his Twitter avatar to an icy image. This has sparked a ton of speculation about what the game will look like during this live stream. Let's wait and see... Jobs
As GamesRadar noted, SIE Santa Monica Studio posted openings for various roles within its programming, art, design, and tech art teams last year — a listing clearly citing the God of War reboot. Senior Combat Designer Candidates "Must have knowledge of God of War (2018) and be able to speak in depth about combat systems, mechanics, and enemies." A listing for Facial Blend Shape Character Artist also specifically mentions the "next-gen gaming platform experience" for the role: something that should limit potential applicants to relatively few animators, given that the next-gen consoles haven't yet been released. He has launched. The waters are getting a bit muddy with a post from Senior Gameplay Animator, calling for someone to "help us push the limits of combat action and movement and set the bar for gameplay on the PS4." God of War Theme for PS4
In April 2019, a new dynamic theme appeared on PS4 to celebrate the anniversary of the God of War reboot. The theme featured Kratos and Atreus rowing, but the theme contained a secret message (discovered by eagle-eyed God of War fans on Reddit). The boat the couple is rowing in has runes etched into the side that translates to "Ragnarok is coming." Could this imply that the God of War sequel will focus on Ragnarok (essentially the Norse mythological version of the apocalypse)? No God of War downloadable content
God of War director Corey Barlog said there were originally plans for the DLC for the 2018 reboot, but said they were shut down for being "too ambitious." This means that the studio can invest resources in an entirely new game, as opposed to post-launch content.

God of War 2: what we want to see

At the end of God of War, we find out that Kratos's wife (and Atreus's mother) Faye was actually a giant named Laufey. This means that Atreus is half God and half Giant, and on top of that, he has a completely different name: Loki. You already know Loki, the trickster from Norse mythology. Hopefully God of War 2 explores this further and we learn more about Faye's secret past, as well as why she kept it all a secret in the first place. We also expect Atreus to embrace the shape-shifting abilities Loki is known for rather than stand on the sidelines shooting arrows at enemies. Atreus is no longer a child
The God of War sequel may continue directly from the events of the previous game, but we think it would be more interesting to see a teenage Atreus and grumpy daddy Kratos go on an adventure. the next generation
It seems highly likely at this point that any potential God of War sequels will make it to PS5 rather than PS4. That means we should see faster load times, better graphics, and a generally more powerful engine that SIE Santa Monica Studios can play with.
