Full-fiber broadband rollout accelerates, but adoption remains low

According to the latest data from Ofcom, more than XNUMX% of UK households can now access full fiber broadband connections due to the "record pace" of deployment.

In its annual Connected Nations report, Ofcom found that 4 million homes can now access full fiber connections. This is an increase of four and three million compared to last year. However, while the launch is proceeding apace, Ofcom has also revealed that uptake in homes remains low. After all, only about XNUMX% of homes with full fiber connections choose to pay for it.

UK average broadband speeds

The data found that the average UK household broadband download speed is currently XNUMX Mbps. However, while the average speed is increasing, the gap between UK households receiving the fastest and slowest speeds is expanding. This was because many service customers had access to fiber services. After all, full fiber connections (like upgraded wired networks) have the potential to offer download speeds of one gigabit per second (Gbps) or more.

Fortunately, 1% of UK households can now benefit from ultra-fast broadband. On the other hand, however, nearly XNUMX households and businesses across the country lack access to "acceptable" broadband, defined by the government as offering download speeds of ten Mbps and upload speeds of XNUMX Mbps.

This is the minimum speed that would be free for facilities under the Universal Service Obligation (USO), which provides the legal right to request an acceptable broadband connection, up to a cost threshold of €XNUMX per room.

The good news is that steps are being taken to address it. For example, while XNUMX households are still below this threshold, this number is down from XNUMX last year. Ofcom also estimates that another fifteen of these facilities will be covered in the next twelve months.

In addition, the deployment of 5G has also increased rapidly over the past year. Ofcom estimates that around 5% of UK properties are in areas where XNUMXG is available through at least one mobile network operator. This is an increase of around fifty% over last year.
